Help! Painting stair banister black colour suggestions.

isey's picture

Hi there,

This is my first post and I am excited to hopefully get some feedback. I am new to decorating and design and definitely do not yet trust my instincts. Here are the facts:

-Our home has an oak railing that I would love to paint black. I am having a hard time picking a black.
-I went to BM today and picked up samples of Black Beauty, Black Bean Soup and Night Horizon.
-I find Night Horizon too brown as we have a flat black finish on our door handles and on our light fixtures as well. Black Bean Soup I like but I think that it may clash with the flat black hardware. Black Beauty is ok but just did not wow me. (What do I know?)
-My wall colour is Stone House.

Here are my questions....thanks in advance

-What is a nice railing black colour? Would you use a solid black with the fixtures I have or one with some red or brown tones?
-What sheen should I use? BM suggested Satin but I have read on the forum gloss.
-Should I paint all of the oak black? Including the panel that is on the wall?
-Should I paint or stain?
-Will it look ok with my light wood floors?
-Should I paint the oak divider trim black as well? (Photo #2)

Today I painted an oak board with each of the 3 BM colours. Night Horizon is definitely too brown for our home. Black Bean Soup is too light as well I think. Black Beauty is nice but seems a little dull. Is this because the samples that I purchased are eggshell? Will it brighten up with a semi gloss?

I will check out ONYX today. I would love a black with a VERY slight redish undertone. Black Bean Soup has too much of a red undertone for our home I think???? (Again, what do I know)

Any suggestions for a black with a slight red undertone? I will check out ONYX today. Who knew black could be so hard? Thank you Thank you Thank you!
