It's me and my bathroom again.
- replaced tub, have pedistal sink to go in, new light is in
- floor tiled (partially) in small white hex tile
- bathtub surround FINALLY ready to go
- plan A was white subway tile around tub and wainscott height around the rest of the room with either white or black ceramic chair rail trim (inspiration pictures attached)
Goal: to update with a retro type look suitable for a 1930's house
After spending more than twice what I budgeted for the surround prep and having an impossible time finding a tiler who wants to take on such a small job without charging more than double normal price, I am rethinking the tiling. it's quite apparent this is now a DIY whether I like it or not.
I'm debating using beadboard/tongue and groove for wainscotting instead but wonder if that will be too busy with hex tile and another tile around tub. I have attached an inspiration picture that shows the combo.
I'm debating using beadboard covered both sides with marine paint around the tub (which is now moistureproof for all intents and purposes). I can't see any reason this can't work but I also can't find anyone who can tell me it will work. Big appeal is ease of install over doing tiles, big downside is I imagine the little grooves would hold soapy scum stuff and be hard to clean. I'm also wondering if I can't just use sheets of back painted plexi but that look may be too modern. At this point I am not sure I care but will not consider the surrounds they sell at the hardware stores at all.
I'm debating going with a square tile instead of a subway.Maybe a 4X4, maybe something larger...can't decide. Not sure why, but subway isn't as high on my list anymore but maybe that is because everyone tells me it's so much work to deal with (I tell you I am so sick of tilers who want only to use 18" tiles because they can slam them up in an hour vs taking the time smaller tiles take).
So I'm looking for suggestions. What should I do with my little bathroom?
Here are some pictures I've been hanging onto so you can get an idea of what I was thinking of. The one grotty one is my bath area and whatever I do will only go as high as the lightswitch for wainscotting and the start of the cove in the bath area.
