I wouldn't say the oil is nutty just like a light veg. oil I just drizzle it on my salad and add lemon juice inplace of dressing. I don't know if I feel any different but I do feel great and I don't know if it is the hemp or the weather that has made the difference but my breakfast keeps me full until lunch without and cravings. I also put hearts my cereal.

Trynto I'm glad you posted that site. Seems a lot of stores are carrying the stuff so I can get it locally. I wasn't able to find a list like that when I googled.

Hemp is from the same family as marijuana but does not contain any THC... :)

Hemp is marijuana basically although now the plant itself is made useless for the fun stuff when grown 'agriculturally'. it's been a crop for years and years and years for rope and is also used in the making of fabric. it seems the 'hearts' are the seed.

Oh, and strange but true, I was just googling to find a supplier in Calgary and up popped this thread.

I don't know Janet but I have been walking around with a smile on my face and couldn't care about a thing for the last week. As long as it doesn't give me the munchies I'm ok. Really I like them add them to salads and on my cereal in themorning they are like shaking sesame seeds on things.

I finally got to try hemp hearts today. A company had a booth at the home show. I really liked the taste. Very nutty. They also had hemp oil drinks, shampoo, and all sorts of things including "orgasmic cream to enhancement the female orgasm". (I figure someone goofed on the grammar because the subject matter got thier mind wandering...funny no sample jars of that for testing at the show ;) ...). I even got to have my neck sprayed with 'kewl spray' which is supposed to relieve muscle problems. I must say, I could feel that stuff for hours.

Anyway, looks like there are a few companies and I think I'll try some when I find it somewhere that I can get it locally (the booth was from Edmonton). If it can really stop sugar cravings, that alone is worth something to me.

is the source where my hemp hearts come from, in lethbridge, alberta.i've tried others, but for me these are the better choice.
zulu, i've never eaten the bars. i have mine raw....4 tbsp in the morning with just 240 calories.
one of the reasons i use these is because dispite how hard i try, i can't always eat the recommended food traingle....i eat lots of fruit and veggies, but have removed red meat from my diet...cuz i suffer from ibs.
dustbunny...i wasn't aware that sugar was a big factor with cholestoral...iwas being naive when my first thought is that hubby doesn't eat white/brown sugars....but as you mentioned, it comes in many forms. i'll have to look into this.
pearlgirl....i have a 15 year old newf/collie mix...the poor soul was starting to suffer from a wee bit of morning disorientation, and problems with his joints...the vet suggested fish oil tablets. i started him on them several months ago...and he's like a young puppy....he's no longer confused when he wakes up, he runs around with more energy and his coat is so much shinnier....and the best part of it.....when i take my vitamins in the morning, he comes and sits at my feet, waiting for his, and takes them like a treat. :clapping: he's such a good boy !!

Thanks for mentioning this. I'll have to see if the bars are available locally (they should be given they seem to come from Lethbridge). I'm always looking for good protein sources although I have to say, the bars mentioned on the site have less protein than some others that are available if you are interested in getting protein (some go as high as 42 g at the body builder stores).

What I would like to clarify though is that there doesn't seem to be anything miraculous here. All (and I mean all) the current, accurate, studies back up that eating enough protein and getting rid of sugars will improve health. This is just another form of protein (good on all counts except it's missing the amino acids which are only available from animal source protiens).

When it comes to cholesterol the biggest factor in bad cholesterol is sugar. You blood vessels will not collect deposits of fat if you don't eat sugars (and that means in all forms). A prime example is the Inuit who ate almost exclusively high fat, high protein diets and never had cholesterol problems, obesity, or diabetes until sugars were introduced.

I can tell you from experience that eating protein at breakfast (eggs/bacon - no toast type experience), only having above ground low sugar veggies, fat, no fruit, no flour, no sugars dropped my cholesterol from dangerous to normal in less than 90 days. I also lost weight had oodles of energy and everything just works better physically and mentally.

I just don't want people assuming it's only these bars that are capable of helping. The key is to what they offer is the protein. They just offer it in another form. The nice part is they are convenient and if they taste good too that's a real draw. However, real whole foods will do the same when it comes to having energy, burning fat, keeping hunger in check as long as you eat the right balance of protien, fats, and non sugar carbs.

I found this info from a web site from Alberta. I checked google and some web sites ship across Canada.

Hemp hearts contain more required amino acids (proteins) than milk, meat or eggs.
*Is a complete protein source--much more balanced & digestible than Soy products.
*Contains about 47% oil, 78% of which is omega 3 & 6--the essential fats.
*Contains all the essential or omega fats required for human health.
*Contains several times more omega 3 essential fat than any fish.
*Provides more energy than energy bars--without their sugar and with much less saturated fat.
*Is suitable for those unable to eat gluten, sugar, milk, nuts & meat.
*Is perfect for those troubled with constipation and for those avoiding carbohydrates.
*A 42 g serving (4 tbsp) contains 240 cal energy from 15 g protein, 15 g polyunsaturated fats ( 11.4 g omega 6 & 3.6 g omega 3), 2.7 g mono-unsaturated fats, 2.1 g saturated fats, 2.5 g fiber, 4.5 g carbohydrates, 2 mg iron, 31 mg calcium, 3.8 mg sodium, 3.8 mg vitamin E, 956 IU vitamin D, .42 mg vitamin C, .05 mg vitamin B6, .14 mg vitamin B2, .58 mg vitamin B1, 1.68 IU vitamin A.
*Every lot can be traced to its source and is laboratory tested to guarantee the absence of contaminants.

Beware of Hemp Protein and Hemp Flour. These competing products are made by grinding the wastes which remain after the valuable oil has been extracted from whole hemp seeds. They are mostly shells.

I bet a little sprinkled over the dog food would give them beautiful glossy coats.

What is the size of the bar you have for Breakfast and what are the calories.
This sounds interesting.

That info is very interesting and I too shall be looking out for them in the Health Food store. My Dr. told me a few years that a gelatin capsule , 1000 mg. of Flax seed oil also lowered cholesterol. I never really took it regularly, as I would forget but I should get more and get back to 1 a day.

Very interesting. I've never heard of them either. I'm vegetarian and it seems like this would defintely be a good option for me. Thanks for posting this. :)

I am showing this to DH as he is always looking for the Miracle Cure and is always worried about his blood pressure and cholestreol.

i buy them at a local health food store. if you're thinking about buying some....make sure they haven't been refrigerated as it makes them stale.
i have mine with my cereal in the mornings. they're good with yogurt too. i usually have a piece of fruit for lunch...and a full meal for supper. i can't eat them with supper as some recommend cuz they keep me awake at night. but i rarely get hungry....i don't crave sweets or fried foods and they generally make me feel good. there's been days i haven;t eaten them....waiting for stock to arrive on the island or whatever...and i feel lithargic....my god, i might be addicted to these things.
i was dubious when i first heard about them...did lots of research and tried them....buying just a pound for us, to see how they went. well...you know how we all look for that 'miracle cure'...well we feel that we've found it. hubby has high cholesterol....he can't be on meds too long cuz his liver suffers from them...he's presently been eating them six weeks, like me, without meds and his levels are down. interesting?? !!
it's worth a try even as a supplement meal replacement on the go.

That was very interesting I will research more about it I had never heard of it before. Do you buy it in a Health Food Store and how have you been using it.

they're shelled hemp seeds. mostly vegetarians use them as a protien supplement. they're delicious, and taste like walnuts. they contain all the essential omega fat reguired in just 4 tbsp.

http://www.greathealth.org/hemphearts.htm

i've been eating them every morning for about 6 weeks...have lost 18 lbs....and have more energy during the days then i have in a long time. hubby is eating them too and has lost 15 lbs.
