Hahaha, jetjane!! Happy to help!! :)
Now we have neighbours complaining about our dogs barking. Well, dog -- only Squirt barks. She is SUCH a troublemaker!!!!
Wow...thanks for the stories. I think I just might like our Lab cross a little more after reading them LOL.
kipper, our husky is still alive and kicking, And luckily seems to have gotten past the "I must detroy everything I can find" phase. She was a horribly destructive menace for the longest time. The vet diagnosed her with separation anxiety and prescribed Clomicalm for her. That seemed to make all the difference. Prior to that, she had eaten and destroyed more things that I can remember. We tried everything we could to contain her when we were away from the house. We tried tying her to a post in our then-unfinished basement. But she was still able to reach a window and tore apart the screen, and chewed the trim around a door. So then we tried a crate. She whined and whined and whined and tried to pry the bars apart with her teeth. Our last resort was putting her in the cold room -- you'd think concrete walls with a steel door would stop her. But no.... when I went down to let her out, I opened the door and could not believe my eyes. She had foam & blood all around her mouth, and there were shards of wood and whatever they put inside steel doors all over the floor. She had totally dislodged the treshold under the door, peeled the metal off the steel door and pulled out the insides, and 2-1/2 feet of the wood door jamb was gone. It was then that I realized we needed serious help!!!!
I think she was on Clomicalm for about 6 month, and then I weaned her off of it. That was about 4 years ago, and she's been fine ever since. Although she does have the occasional relapse. One evening when we came home, there was garbage strewn through every room on the main floor of the house. I could just imagine the glee the two dogs felt as they rummaged through the garbage and "decorated" for us!!
As for our Lab.... her problem is that she wants attention 24/7, and if she isn't getting it, she'll do something that she KNOWS will get attention -- even if it's negative attention. I cannot tell you how many socks she's stolen -- I have no idea where she finds them all!! She just stands there and looks at me with a sock (sometimes 2) hanging out of her mouth, waiting for a reaction. Most of her bad behaviour happens when we're at home -- she probably knows that stealing a sock when we aren't there won't give her the result that she wants. Although she does have this annoying habit of taking shoes and putting them in the living room. I'm not sure what message she's trying to send......
*Sigh* So who are the owners and the ownees in our house?! ;)
When Capone was a puppy he ate 2 feet of drywall all around the pantry and 3 square feet of linoleum from the kitchen floor. Beagles are extremely mouthy puppies though and it is a bit extreme so we got him a crate and he loved it. My other beagles haven't destroyed much else. :D
was a puppy too...about 3 or 4 months old, part terrior I think, not big either. The owner was just stunned at the damage and posted pictures and really, it was hard to imagine how such a cute little furface (you had to see the picture of it with bits of dry wall on it's face to appreciate how funny it was at the same time) had done what that one had done.. .especially moving the dryer. I imagine the drywall wouldn't be too big a deal if it had been sprayed by the water coming out of the line it chewed (one of the woven type) but moving that dryer was indeed something.
OMG!!! I never dreamed pets could be so destructive. And I thought my teething babies were bad for gnawing on my coffee table!!
Smoodgie, what happened to your husky?? I think I might have been afraid of dogs who could eat their way through steel doors.
Just how does a dog manage to chew their way through walls and move major appliances??????? Maybe the dog food manufacturers should lay off some of the vitamins they're putting in there. Clearly this behavior can't be natural!!!!
kinda glad I don't have a pet,
kipper
what dogs won't get into. On another pet forum I visit someone put their puppy (note...puppy) in the bathroom. When they came home it had chewed through a water line, dug through the drywall, pushed the clothes dryer (on the other side of the wall), and escaped into the house. The pictures were hysterical because the pup didn't look particularly ashamed of itself at all but the damage was considerable (water and drywall all over the bathroom). I haven't locked my dog in the bathroom since.
Could it be that the lab is bored? Just wondering if there is something that might keep it interested enough to ignore all the other good things it can get into. With my last dog, it was giving her a huge knuckle bone (raw/frozen) to keep her away from the baseboards, TP, rugs, etc. while I was at work. She had to have those for a couple of years until she calmed down and became more interested in sitting and looking out the window all day.
Wow, you do have a pretty full house there, janetc!!
Every time I complain about how destructive HIS lab is, my hubby points out that MY husky cost him over $1,000 when she ate a window frame and a patio door at our old house. She also tore a steel door apart in our cold room. And chewed off about 2-1/2 feet of the door jamb.
At least our cats are pretty good at staying out of trouble!! ;)
all i can say is im glad my dog is 10 years old and too darn lazy to be a nuisance lol....he just sleeps and follows the kids around when they are up and when they are to bed, he is with me every minute, as i write this he is laying at my feet sleeping lol.....sorry cant take your lovely dog, 3 kids, dog, cat, fish and hamster are just enough lol
smiles
janetc
Well, there are now approximately 12 rolls of toilet paper strewn through the hallway and the living room. So much for our bargain TP purchase at Costco!! :hairpull:
If she was trying to help renovate before, what's she trying to do with the TP?! Wait, don't answer!!
Anyone want a Lab?? I'll pay you to take her!!!!!
oh my smoodgie that is tooooo funny, lol thank goodness she is going to be fine.....and foxxy how embarrassing that would have been too, lol poor lady!
smiles
janetc
yikes! well maybe she got the urge to help you renovate!:D
check the walls, maybe she was helping!!
Squirt outdid herself today -- I found chewed sandpaper and a chewed plastic container of Polyfil on the living room floor when I went home at lunch  :hairpull:
Ohhhh my gosh!!! LOL!
Hahahahhaha!!! But oh, that poor lady!!!!!
Hoochiemomma, the pharmacist actually DID waive the dispensing fee :) Ummm.... why do they charge the fee in the first place?? I don't get paid an extra $12 each time I do something at work!!
Years ago my neighbour was waiting on the parish priest to pay his home visit after the birth of her new son, to discuss the Christening,
They had a toy poodle about 1 yr as well. Well the dog ran to the door with her douce bag trailing behind him as she opened the door to the priest.
Talk about embarrassing.........she could not get the dog to let go of it...so she put the dog in the basement and he cried through the whole meeting with the priest. She was ready to give him away that day..........when she told me we both had tears of laughter. LOL
I don't suppose she waived the dispensing fee in return?
oreokitty, you're funny :)
The pills have been replaced -- the phamacist said it's the funniest story she's heard in a long time!!
Well at least he/she is using protection of some kind! LOL!
jenjen, at least it took my mind off my tooth for a bit!!
amy, give us your Shrek update as soon as you can.... and I also thought peroxide was a weird thing to use -- but it sure did work!!
Hahaha, Jeep, that line from the doctor is too funny!! :D
DBD, thanks for the salt tip :) Why do dogs love to eat things they shouldn't?? I realized after the pill incident that there were four 4-packs of pudding cups sitting right there on the kitchen counter -- which would you rather eat?!
I have the remains of the chewed plastic pill packaging as proof!! The pharmacist asked for my name and told me to come in during her shift on Friday and she'll replace the eaten pack.
huh...i'm thinking it was a bad nite for pets last nite...LOL...
france...nahhhh....you didn't incriminate yourself at all...LOL....but might i suggest keeping the imporant cannister a lil higher on the shelf...LOL
this is just what you needed right after you surgery Smoodg...wouldn't you say?? ;)
Sorry I said 'dog' when it should be 'cat'. I'm sure the cat wouldn't appreciate the mix up.
That is quite funny. I would bet the pharmacy hears the 'dog ate it' a few too many times but all the same it is one place you don't expect to have to use that excuse. Guess you'll have to request dog proof packaging (is there such a thing?).
I can't even remember now what exactly Ebony ate last summer that caused me to feel like a dweeb. It was something important that I am blocking, like my mom's power of attorny papers or living will...not good as the timing was really bad and having to call the hospital and say 'the dog ate it' wasn't one of those things that had them inspired with confidence in me. Ebony loves paper anything.
Anyway, Ebony got into some nicorettes when she was a pup. The emerg told me to feed her salt (about a half tsp for her weight which was about 15 lbs at the time). I had to give it to her twice as the amount was a little light, but on that second spoon she upchucked in short order. So that's another useful thing to try if your lab has now developed a taste for the BC pills and tries it again. Anything is better than the time and money emerg costs sometimes.
Amy I hope your dog is okay.
Now France...hm... didn't your pooch come bothering you for some doggie chocolate chip cookies? I'm having fun imagining a dog with even worse munchies than normal.
feel bad for you all with the pet prob's....but this thread was too funny!! Gave me a good giggle tonight!
When DS #1 was 2 years old he ate the months supply of Fertility pills I was taking to try and get pregnant. I freaked out and thought they may harm him so I called the Emerg. and when the DR quit laughing he said he would be fine may have twins later in life but nothing to worry about.
I won't know how Shrek is until tomorrow, he's having a sleep over at the vet.
My BIL gave us Shrek after his seperation in the fall, my niece named him.
We were going to change the name but we didn't want to hurt DN's feelings, she's 4. My boys love his name too. I still don't feel like it fits in with the other pets names- Pheonix and Titan- but it's growing on me :)
How's is your dog feeling? I hope he isn't sick still. Why did the Vet say to use peroxide? Can't that hurt him?
Well, it's good to know I'm not the only one with a wacko dog!!!!! Two wacko dogs, actually!!
amy, hope you don't have any more trips to the emergency vet!! Not only is it stressful -- it isn't cheap!! How's Shrek doing?? Love his name, by the way :)
france, already called the pharmacy and asked about getting a replacement!!
kipper, laugh away!!!! If it wasn't so aggravating, I would laugh about it too!! Do you have any idea how embarrassing it is to call the vet and say "Uh, yeah, my dog, uh, ate my birth control pills." I bet I was on hold for so long 'cause the vets were all on the floor laughing at the crazy woman on the phone!!
I'm shocked:D ;) I'll bet he slept good, I know I would!
i did giggle at this one. hope your pooch is alright now!
note to self smoodgie: replace birth control pills!!
another not really funny story... and i don't want to incriminate myself here but... last summer our pooch found his way into our "wacky tabacky" canister at the cottage and proceeded to munch away. we caught him almost right away but he did manage to swallow an unknown amount.... bad bad parents! he was absolutley fine but he did sleep well that night.
