Here's a sneak peek at my cabinet paint job...

The painting went painstakingly slow...I cleaned, sanded, primed, sanded, primed, sanded, first coat, sanded, second coat, sanded where needed and did touchups. If you're a perfectionist, send them out to be done. ;)

I used ICI Dulux Kitchen & Bath 100% Acrylic paint in "Natural White". Love it. Love how easily it went on and how good it is to work with. Not nuts on the primer, though. I used BIN 123 and I found it to cause more headache because of it's fast drying capabilities.

I still have to paint the bottom cabinets. I'll post the final result when I finally get that portion done.

The new countertop will have to wait -- hence making the backsplash delayed. But overall I am really happy with the start of my "new to me" kitchen.:)

I tried some mock ups using the willow, fairview taupe, and a blue grey (well at least as close as I can get on my monitor). While I was at it I tried a pure grey and and a darker blue grey. If you want to try another colour, let me know.

WOW! I feel I should pay you something for all the work you do with mock-ups! Thank you ever so much!

The mock-ups are a great tool for me and I need to think more about what colour to use now. Also, I can show DH these wonderful mock-ups too,

Again, THANK YOU! *insert hugging graemlin*

Hi Thanks for the wall colour, I'll check it out. Great mock ups by DBD, I;m still thinking pale/mid grey to blend in with the floor tiles. Sarah's recent cottage colours may help, she always uses very subtle colours. I would love to see a show that features "mistakes" she's made. Every store she enters she always seems to find exactly what she's looking for. On her new website it says her staff are available for a consultation for $800 for 2 hours, trying getting that expense past the DH. LOL

And just in case you are considering all white...

Hi - Paintbrushpatty - Love your kitchen , could you tell me the colour of your walls please. On the shelves you could stand a colourful plate; various sizes of white pottery (check out Sarah Richardson's kitchens) when your kitchens finished you'll have a better idea of what colour you want to use for an accent. For the bottom cupboards I like the idea of a grey tone, maybe the colour of the tile grout - maybe try BM sample pots before you decide.

Hi Nana24,
I painted the walls CIL's Toasty Grey. This is one colour that I would consider painting every room in. It's very relaxing and clean. Thanks for the SR tip. She is my favorite designer and I will check out her website for inspiration!
:)

ETA: I have attached a picture of our ceramic tile.

Thanks everyone for your kind replies. Much appreciated! :)

I'm waivering on the bottom cabinet & drawer front color. Instead of going with BM's Fairview Taupe, I am leaning towards BM's Willow. Both chips compliment my floor tiles. Fairview Taupe is a closer match to the grout actually highlighting the darker tile tones as well. Willow seems to be a nice contrast to both the countertop and tile, but keeping with the color family.

BUT...

I also have a blue-ish gray running through the ceramic tile too. And now I wonder if I should introduce a very dark gray with blue undertones to the bottom cabinets instead. I could tie in the gray/blue, taupe and white with blacksplash tiles.

The countertop has to stay unfortunately...until I drive my husband completely crazy. :D

If it makes you feel better, the painter who has been here was telling me that when he's working for some designers and many of the 'moneyed' they insist that real wood be painted by brush (eg. no rollers particularly when it comes to trim) so people know it's wood. That smooth smooth finish we seem to think we should have is seen by some as a sign of manmade materials being underneath. So tell yourself that 'not as smooth as sprayed' is exactly as it should be.

As for that drying time, yes if you were outside and it was hot it can be as bad as too cold for trying to work with some things. It's barely been in the mid 20's here this week and the painter was cursing even that heat with it causing the paint to dry a bit too fast.

Excellent job! I love white cabinets. I really like the new hardware you've chosen as well.

Can you elaborate on how the BIN123 didn't work well? I am thinking of using the Zinsser low-odor oil primer on my cabinets, but I'm curious about your experience with the 123.

Hi Dawn,

I did all of my priming in the garage, and maybe it was the heat and the humidity, but I found the primer to dry quicker than I would have liked.

Often, the primer would dry on the ends of my roller (and I did use three rollers for the whole priming job) and then leave little crusty bits in the finish.

I used my fingers to smooth out the bits and then re-rolled the area as best as possible.

Because I had the problem of varnish or stain coming through after my first coat of priming, I had to do a thorough second job of it. So the added stress of the crusty bits in my finish drove me crazy.

In hindsight, I would have gone with the oil primer just to have that additional time to make the job easier. I think the sanding would have been cut in half, too.

I went through four tack cloths, by the way, throughout the whole job. I think it is important to work as "clean" as possible and using the tack cloths to repeatedly prep the doors before painting was efficient.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. I am very proud of the finish. Although it is not as smooth as if sprayed, the brush strokes are hardly noticeable and soft. I can actually live with this job! LOL!

I was worried that if there were any imperfections I'd be the irrational woman on garbage day throwing out kitchen cabinets! But to hear my family and neighbours give the praise they have on the end result makes me even more satisfied...

I think coming to a place where you can accept that it is a paint job (I used a good 2.5" brush for the top coats), -- it is what it is: a painted kitchen -- the idea of a smooth-to-the-touch finish isn't as important anyway...As long as the finish is blemish-free. And with all the hard work, the result is most satisfying!:clapping:

I wasn't sure about the hardware, you know. But I like it now. I am in search of the perfect black iron kitchen light. I had my eye on one but it is well over my budget...Hopefully, I'll find something to give the kitchen some pop. I don't want to be overly traditional in the design either...

Any suggestions for the shelving that frame the corner windows would be much appreciated. I don't like a lot of knick knacks but I am not sure what to do with them.

Like I said before, I'll post pics when I finish the bottom cabinets. I plan on painting them out in BM's Fairview Taupe.

Thanks again! :)

Yes, it's a lot of work but wasn't it worth it? They look like entirely new cupboards in the pictures.

It's gonna look fantastic - when you are finished. Well actually it looks terrific on top already and the handles go very well. A lot of hard work - but the end justifies the effort.;)
