Hey Redheron, saw your show

I just wanted to let you know that I caught the new show tonight and enjoyed it (compared to that game show joke I saw earlier). I liked that the rationale was being explained for doing things.

Can you tell me (since I must have missed it), do the winning homeowners decide what they want to keep or is it predetermined (seems to me they mentioned keeping one piece...is that right?) ? I wondered because they both had the same carpets (or was that a coincidence?) and they seemed to speak of it as if it was the prize. If it was the prize, I assume the rest goes back to the store, but what happens to things like the built ins if they are in the losing house? I guess I'm asking what they get to keep of the makeover and how that is determined.

but caught the write up in the globe - noticed that he needs rescuing by a Hero right off the bat.

What irritated me, was the contradictions in his opinion. Obviously he is entitled to one, but to slam design shows for being monotonous and encouraging uniformity, while simultaneously slamming a designer for wearing something that ISN'T monotonous - well, that's just a poorly conceived argument. I'd give that article a failing grade!

Can't wait to see the show, if our dish would ever work again!!!

I was at a conference in Waterloo and missed the show because the hotel tv could not get HGTV!!!!!! What the heck?

Thank goodness it will be a repeat and hopefully repeatedly!

I saw his picture... like he is an endorsement for style...

HA!

I need to get a photo transfer of his face and where it on a T-shirt for the upcoming episode - with the caption.. "What Not To Wear!"

she looked fabulous in those glasses....

here is the write up from the Globe...what a dumb ass (to quote Red Foreman...That 70's show)...yes the hair is lovely...like to know what he wears...

Design Match, a new show on HGTV (it airs Fridays at 5 p.m., and Tuesdays at 9:30 p.m.), is typical. The description says, "Two teams, each made up of a Designer and a Homeowner, compete to recreate a high-end inspiration room with a low-end budget. The original creator of the inspiration room will judge who has done the best recreation of his work." What utter piffle.

The episode I saw featured two rather nervous couples competing to make a room match the "inspiration room," which cost $50,000 and looked like it was created for the set of a dreary daytime TV drama. To call it bland would be like saying that the CBC is in a mess -- "bland" is a serious understatement.

One of the couples ended up painting over some fine wood trim. It was an outrage. And co-host Meredith Hero looks as if she's got up for Gypsy dancing lessons. You wonder if she's hiding her tambourine under that shawl thingy.

Did you see Doyle's column in the Globe today? Really slammed the show as well as others, plus some criticism of Meredith's outfit. Like that guy is a style maven! Have you seen any pictures of him - I don't know what he does with his hair, but it's definitely weird.

I guess you know you've made it when your show is reviewed in the Globe & Mail!

There already is a show based on copying an expensive room for less, of course, although it's not done as a competition between two home owners. Hey here's an idea, how about doing a show that's redoes a room for more! O.k., that's a bit wonky, but it can't be worse than that show that preceded Red's new one (can't remember the name of the foolish thing; someone already mentioned it earlier in the thread).

I was glad Red was able to painted out the wood trim in her "client's" house -- such an improvement. Did the guy really object to painting out the wood, Red, or was that a little "tension" stuck in for the sake of tv? Gotta confess, I didn't care for the benches. If they're a signature of the "judge's" designs, pooey on her. They might be ok up in the muskokas, but I wouldn't want them in my city home.

Hey, don't we all agree that Red looks great in a pair of glasses? :-)

The show aired at 6:30 last evening France and I believe it airs on Saturday and Sunday - between 1-3 both days, just not sure of the times. HGTV.ca has the listings.

My homeowners did get some new purchases out of the show after the fact which they love - they really are the nicest couple! Halfway through shooting the show, the wife and I realized we went to the same university and that her maid of honour had been in my program with me. Small world huh?

This last week one of the Guest Designers on the show and I figured out we went to the same elementary school except that she was three years ahead of me... weird!

I always do. FANTASTIC, Scarlett Birdie!

I loved the room, and I like the show. I like to see real decorators decorating actual rooms in real people's homes in a way that could be duplicated without getting a new mortgage. I feel certain your homeowners would be happy with the changes despite the loss - I loved the chairs and the elegant bureau and the ottoman and even Sharon's benches. I hope you helped them pick out a new, nicer area rug, to put your Heron seal on the room. Maybe from the elegant boutique the other homeowners went to during the shop segment - I spied the letters on the window, or part; R DHE ON ES ENT ALS ....something like that.

As for what I liked best? The redhead of course. You looked marvellous!

The gnome can go though. How did he get in there, anyway?

I totally agree. Heck, my TV's on right now and I'm not even in the room!!

Hey Red... how do you use Publisher for drawing plans and design work? I use it for my company newsletter but that's about it. Do tell!

one other thing i forgot to mention with the makeovers last night....it was finally nice to see decorating being done around a real tv being in the room as most rooms you see on tv or in mags dont show a room with a tv....and im always looking for ideas on where i could put the tv when i change the living room around

Funny you should say that Red (about the benches in Sharon's place) because while I was posting last night, I was thinking to myself....hey, wait a minute, that's a signature look for Ms Sharon Mimran and I know I've seen that kind of element thrown in her rooms in the past. So why would it not go in this room if this room was a space typical of her signature style as well? Strange.

you finally got to see me on the small screen!! YAY!

Urban Girl - we use Sketch up in the Studio.. I am holding on to Microsoft Publisher though.. I LUV IT! DH thinks I'm on crack.. he's a Sketch Up Guru!

I thought the benches were particularly nice, and anyone who objects to painting out wood trim should be arrested. I'm so proud of you.
Not happy about the gnome though. None of us are.

Red,

what program did you have on you laptop when you showed your couple your idea for the fireplace wall? I was watching with DH and he is a Sketch-up fan and wanted me to findout if that's what you use.

Thanks,
urban girl

Irony of the situation... Sharon had those benches in her front hal will books and pics all stacked on them.. which was where we got the idea.... lol

I've done the voiceovers for the first five episodes... more fabulous tidbits to come - and well Hal's outfits... 'nuff said!

and if you bought the house because you guys fell in love with the wood...i would leave it....so many may be painting it out now but you will see one day it will be all wood again lol things change so fast and we painted out some of ours but one day i would prefer to go back....you dont have the maintenance of keeping the painting up and ours gets marked up and so on with kids and everyday wear and tear and i just found the wood didnt show the wear that much

must have missed that...i didnt notice if the other couple had painted trim....it just stuck with me as the room red was doing the guy was being a typical man and being reluctant to paint out his trims

Did the room that won have the wood trim painted? I forget. :)

no it wasn't...but painting out the brown wood made a huge difference...it looked better than having half of it painted white and the other half stained...IMO

I think the option of the distressed white benches was BRILLIANT! The designers room had that cottagy feel to it as evident by having chicken wire instead of glass inserted in the uppers of the white builtins... Obviously, it was a TEXTURAL element that Red's homeowners didn't wish to mimic. So, to substitute something else that would MATCH the feel of the room and USE the PRINCIPLES of DESIGN as intended was shear artistry! I do believe that the pretense of the show is to match the design/feel of the room using any/all of the principles of design that the Host Designer utilized... obviously budget (10% of the original designer room) won't allow for everything so, choosing priorities is key... Also, to COPY the room item for item would make for a boring, flat, non educational TV show.... Great Job RED!
I also noted that there was no architecture in the host's room ie no leaded glass in the windows, no crown mouldings, no beefed up window/door mouldings either ... so painting out the homeowners to provide a blank canvas to enhance the window treatments was not a far stretch either.

both rooms were great but i prefered the built ins as well but i also wondered if you really have a choice. My hubby would have been cringing about painting out the wood too, but that is a man thing! if the clients get to keep the room as is and only lose the rug, i would say that is still a good deal, heck they can always pick up another rug

The show was good. I hope that guy didn't kill himself after painting out the wood trim and then losing (as he had threatened). The show has a good format and I will be looking forward to watching more episodes. You looked great Red but the orange shirt on the other guy was a little over the top. And your guy whining about helping was a little lame.

how was your client after painting the window trim and not winning? Did he recover?
