homebody's crab dip

homebody posted a recipe for crab dip a few months ago that's SO good, I think it deserves a thread of its own so more people can find it and try it!! It's been a hit each time I've made it.

Thank you, homebody!! Here's her recipe.....

I make a crab dip, and it's better if you make it the day before...

One can of crab meat, drained
Two green onions, finely chopped
One stick of celery, finely chopped
Half of a slab of cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup mayo
dash of tabasco
One tbsp dijon mustard
One tbsp horseradish

You can make it with Flakes of Ham instead of crab meat if you like.

Put in enough mayo that it can be dipped out with a cracker or a chip, and you should be all set.

I've made this for a lot of different occasions and everyone seems to like it. You might want to double the recipe if there are going to be a lot of people, as the quantities above just make a small bowl full.

thanks for the accolades for my recipe -- any of us that ever make that crab dip will have lots of stories to associate with it...

My SIL makes it with ground-up cooked ham, which is good because not as salty as Flakes of Ham -- I think it would be good with shredded cooked chicken too -- everyone seems to like the recipe...

When we were frist married we lived way up North by Alaska. There was a guy that used to come into the store and sell his hand made crafts. Well one day he came in and he had really nice handmade mitts on. I commented on them and his reply are you ready " Yeh the used to be my cat". I nearly died. Ok the crab dip sounds great I 'm goinbg to give it a try.

Here i am with a thread named in my honour and I'm all like squirming with pride and then it turns out to be about savage rituals with pigs and crabs, or maybe even pigs with crabs, who knows any more???

ALTHOUGH I will share this little nugget...when I was preschool, I had a baby pig and he was my special pet (he was one of many, we lived on a farm, but I played with him allthe time, and pigs are so cute and smart -- and clean BTW if they have the chance) -- anyway he was my little friend. So I start school, which I hated with a passion, and one afternoon I came home and no little Andy there to greet me. So naturally I ask my mother where's Andy? And she was an avoider type an dbesides that going through menopause, so she said, He is away for a while visiting his grandmother. So night after night as we had supper, I would say, When do you suppose Andy will be back from his grandma's? Finally my dad who was into brutal reality said Never. You're eating him. EEEEWWWWW. Ask me how I felt about pork for a w3hile after that, let alone going to my grandmothers.

Anyway, glad you liked the cra dip, it is pretty good.

OMG! I'm choking on my sandwich!

Years ago, before kids, my dh and I went to Malawi, and there was an overlander truck filled with backpackers at the same camp as us. They brought along a pig, and that night they first played with it, and then while the squealing was still echoing around the beach, they slaughtered it right by the ladies toilets. I was crying in my tent with my hands over my ears, I couldn't bear the squeals, it sounded like it was in so much pain. I didn't go to the loo that night, but by the next morning I couldn't hold it in anymore, and went to the ladies. Well, there was the pig, hanging upside down and they were shaving it, and ready to gut it. I just ran!

Needless to say I didn't eat pork for an entire year after that! And we moved to another beach that same day, when another truck arrived that afternoon also with a pig! It seems the pig is part of the 'experience africa' trip for the foreigners.

oh no i used to play with them...they had the elastics around their claws...so my dad would cut one of the elastics off cuz then my mom would use the wooden spoon to pick them up when they grabbed on to it to put them in the pot...but i used to get a stick and when the clamped on to it i used to pull them around the kitchen...keep in mind that i come from a family that used to bring home a whole pig and carve it up on the kitchen table in the basement and then they would spilt the meat with the family..everyone pitched in

oh i remember one time when i was in my dads van i saw a broom handle with ropes attached to it leaning up in the back of the van...being 6 years old i didn't think anything of it..well then another time i got into the van and found out what that broom handle with the ropes were for...cuz attached to those ropes attached to the broom handle were CHICKENS....that's right i said chickens...there musta been about 6 or 7 of them...hanging upside down...later on that day i found out why they were hanging upside down...apparently you have to hang them upside down so that the blood runs to their head...it's apparently better for when they chop the head off :D

so who's hungry!!?!?!?!?!?!?

that easy...if it's fresh crab then you'll know they're done when they go from a blueish/green to and orange colour...as for the frozen legs...once the water starts to back up to a boil after you put the legs in....i'd say about 5-7 mins!...that's it that's all

when i was a kid my parents used to get bushells of crab and my mom would boil them then freeze them...the best part about that was when they brought them home before they went into the giant pot...my dad used to let them crawl around the kitchen floor...LOL

itsjustme's picture
itsjustme

That easy? Just throw them in a pot of boiling water? How do I know when it's ready? Besides the fact that the crab isn't trying to climb out of the pot anymore! Just kidding, I'll get frozen legs!

We make a seafood salad in the Deli with the fake crab and it sells like crazy. I don't like it but it would work fine I am sure.

I don't see why not. No reason why you can't modify the recipe according to your tastes -- I hate celery, so I just don't put it in :) Nobody else knows it's missing!! :D

that sounds really good...i'll have to try it...i'm not a fan of canned crab meat...would it be possible to use that packaged kind you find in the seafood isle at the supermarket?
