How to Decorate a Long Family Room

skhan's picture

Hi! I was wondering if you guys can advise on furniture placement when working with a really long family room?   The room is 9'9" by 19'.  So its really long and therefore i dont know how i should be placing the sofas. See the floor plan below. I have an area rug that I had purchased earlier from Pottery barn which I really love.  The  dimensions of the rug however are about 9x12.  So it doesn’t cover the entire area.  Can I still work with that area rug in a room of this size?  I am hoping so since I really love it and a lot of my accessory pieces (throws, pillows, silk panel curtains) coordinate with the rug.  We still have to purchase new furniture for the space.  So I was hoping to get some advice on furniture placement so I know what type of pieces I should be looking for.  We definitely need a lot of seating for the space because we entertain a lot and I have a lot of family.  So I don’t know how to place the sofa pieces so that they work for entertaining and so that they also work for watching tv - since this is our family room as well.  I have indicated below where the tv is currently placed.  We are considering one of the pieces to be a Chaise sofa (see image below) but are not sure if that would work in the space etc.  Can you please advise on what would be best way to go in regards to furnishing this room?   Thanks! ImageImage

Hi Skhan,Sorry for late reply.  A love seat and your 8x10 rug would certainly work in the room. ImageImage

Hi Dytecture! Thanks for your response.  I remeasured my rug and its actually 8x10.....i am hoping i can still keep it in the space....Also, do you think we could place a love seat or sofa instead of the chair?....we are hoping to get a lot of comfortable seating in the space...Thanks.

Hi Skhan, I couldn't find the location of the TV in the plan, but here are my thoughts about furniture arrangement in the room. I think the 9x12 rug would fit there.  Good luck. ImageImage

Hello skhan,

This would be a great question for our Ask A Designer column. Email Cameron MacNeil through the Ask A Designer page:

Or here are some helpful videos on furniture arranging:

Good luck with the living room!
