I often look at the bedroom pics on this site, and see so many different styles of bedmaking, I wondered - what's underneath? How many different ways do we all make the bed and what are the pros and cons?
I'm a duvet "throw and go" - no top sheet, no blanket, no fuss. I tried putting a decorative, folded "something" across, but it gets kicked to the floor and the puppies wind up playing tug-of-war with it so it's just the duvet and the cover gets tossed in the wash way more often than it would if we didn't have animals!
I'm sure lots of you are way more interesting than that - lol.

When I was young I hardly ever made the bed. I don't know why.
About 15 years ago I bought my first duvet - and now I have about 5 different covers (winter and summer). I use a fitted sheet, flat sheet and duvet in the bag. Two pillows with decorative shams, two with covers that match the sheets and a whole plethora of pointless pillows that live in a big basket overnight.
I'm obsessive about making my bed now because I like the look of it all dressed.

I have a white duvet cover, and then folded at the foot of the bed is my comforter, which co-ords with the 2 shams (which cover the white flaty pillows we use everyday, lol) At night, I stack the shams and the comforter on the ottoman at the foot of the bed, and it is easy to unroll when making the bed again.
We're a fitted, top sheet and duvet puller-upper family. My husband, being an Air Force brat, was taught to make the tight corners -- and I appreciate it -- but with platform beds, it's just not necessary. :D
There are some days when our beds are left tangled up...I'm okay with that, too. My son, being all four and a handbag, thinks jumping on our bed is one of life's more fun things to do anyway. :)
Love this thread!
Bed-making in the morning was drilled into me by my mother and now I really can't stand an un-made bed. I have not been the same with my own children though.;)
I am very simple, fitted sheet and duvet in cover. So, out of bed, shake the duvet and put it in place, arrange feather pillows and put back the two shams that are usually stashed on the side chair.
That's it, that's all.
Not too long ago, I read or saw on TV that 'they[ - the bed experts:)
say NOT to make your bed when first getting up - you are supposed to allow or leave it to air out - oh, that made me feel good:laugh: to hear that - I have no problem allowing the bed to air out.
I remember always telling my Mom that - why make the bed as I am only going to get back in and mess it up later that night.
She was fussy with her bed and wouldn't leave in the morning without making it - even if being late -
I always make the bed can't stand an unmade bed whenit is time to go to sleep. I use a fitted sheet on the bottom with a flat sheet put with finished side down so when I fold it back the finished edge is up. I fold the duvet back down so it is at the bottom edge and then the flat sheet over it. The bootom sheet is exposed and I put 2 pillows flat with 2 small pillow on top of them. Very plain and simple set up as DH just heaves the pillows on the floor when he wants to go to bed. I also iron my sheets I like them nice and crisp and I change them every 3 days.
Oh bed...the very thought is heaven to someone who has slept on the sofa the past few nights (the bedroom had to be cleared and painted and there are still no form of curtains hung so it's just not a comfy place with my neighbour's kitchen window looking right in).
For me I am basically a 'go' person. I just use bottom, top sheets, duvet with cover and once I'm in there I tend to wake up in the same place so not much to do but put the duvet back where I was.
Meanwhile I had to find my extra decorative type pillows and shams tonight for the Realtor pictures. I just can not be bothered with them normally but since I got rid of the head board, the extra pillows may help the look.
lol - I don't feel so bad now. More of us are practical than I thought.
I like the "sandwich" idea, but I think DH would have it looking more like spaghetti by morning so I probably won't go that route. I don't do the extra pillows either, because I don't want to have to deal with them at night.
I read something recently about couples who use two twin size duvets on a queen or king size bed, so they don't have the "stealing the covers" issue. I think I'm going to try that one this winter. It's not even like he uses them all, he just rolls over on top of them
We actually take the duvets out of the covers and store them in the summer, and just use the covers empty. It is sooooo hot here!
My mother still does the top sheet upside down and folded back so you see the pretty edge, and always always always hospital corners on the bottom of the sheets and blankets. When her regular housekeeper was away the "fill in" put the comforter on the guest bed upside down, (it has palm trees on it) and she was so shocked that anyone would do that. I'm so careful when I visit now.
When our puppies grow out of the "chew up everything" stage I may try a throw again in winter, and maybe some nice pillows.
I'm a "shake and go" person, too. DH has 2 pillows, I have one, we have a fitted sheet and a plain white comforter in a duvet cover. That's it ! I've always wondered what you all do with all those extra pillows at night, I wouldn't know where to put them, and as for DH, he'd probably just dump them on my side for me to deal with!
I use a fitted sheet on the mattress and the flat sheet I place on the wrong side so that when I fold it over the right side (edge trim) appears in view.
I place my white down duvet uncovered over the the flat sheet and then top with another coordinating flat sheet (I prefer this 'sandwich' - layering style rather than an actual duvet cover as I got so tired of always having to plump, fix and find the moving down duvet getting lost in the duvet cover)
The final top layer is the comforter which matches the bedskirt and shams ( bed in the bag type) to finish.
When I feel like dressing up or accessorizing further, I toss decorative pillows and a throw.
I also turn down the sheets exposing the edges rather than the tuck under the pillows style.
I like the layered look with lots of pillows. Not so practical each night when exhausted and it takes the extra time to undress and undress the bed:rolleyes:
