This kind of leads back to the dining room. Ok....I've been debating as to whether I should re-finish all the trim in the house. It needs to be done because the varnish is very old and it is scratching very easily. I thought I would hold off because I think it will be a very hard task to accomplish with success.
I want to re-do it but I'm afraid of taking on such a big project and have it come out poorly. The current colour does not appeal to me (there's just too much of it) and I'm afraid it may be hard to find paint colours for the walls that I like that will go with it. With all these things going through my head I need some straight up advice on whether I should attempt this on my own. There are 3 french doors which I will definately not do myself. But I figure that if I can do the trim myself, the doors can be taken off and sent to get done by a proffesional.
?1- Is it something that a novice can take on and if so tips on how are appreciated.
?2- Would staining the trim dark brown throughout and leaving the door current colour (it would still match with the hard wood floors) be an option that will look good?
?3- What about the fireplace? Could I stain the fireplace dark and leave the doors on the bookshelves as they are?
My only other option (that would make things easier) would be to paint the trim. As much as I like white trim, I do not want to paint any of it other than in the kitchen and bedrooms (already has been done in those rooms). I want to keep the traditional arts and crafts feel of the house in the architecture. The house has been kept in its original state for 75years and I don't want to mess with that. I will bring in other styles through my own taste in furniture and art.
I need some serious help here. This is probably the biggest do-it-yourself project I will be taking on. I am very very AFRAID!!!
