My yard is the worst! I've used the excuse that I have my baby twins and my dh is not around much but....
It is also dry here and I don't have underground sprinklers and my side is at the opposite end of the tap. So... I need something that is easy care. I can pick weeds and I do keep things trimmed (the grass doesn't really grow without much water Ha Ha ;)
But I would loves some easy tips. I'm thinking I need to dig a scalloped space around my trees on the side and maybe I should edge it and I'd like it to fill in with catmint. I think. What are your suggestions?
Thanks!
Here are two pics - I will add the other two once I do the ol stretch and skew trick

I like your little fence!!! I would avoid roses though, as they really do need quite a bit of attention in order to do their best...and they do need to be kept moist. I agree with the others.... that you really don't want to make more work for yourself. Now that Fall is coming I would suggest the you top dress and reseed those bare patches on the lawn, then set up a weekly mowing schedule for next Summer. Rememeber that grass really does need watering on a regular basis so I would suggest that you call in a plumber to put in another faucet.
I agree with homebody. I wouldn't make new beds when you haven't the time to tend to what you have already. I would tend to the lawn first, it looks patchy and needs some attention. Once your lawn looks smooth and lush, it will make a huge difference already.
If you are finding mowing the lawn difficult by the trees, then you can make a space around the base of them.
Also trim the shrubs, tree branches, and neaten the edges. Maybe plant something in the existing bed you have by the tree.
you will be making more work for yourself keeping them clean and watered...it depends on whether you think you will spend more time on the yard in the future whether you should do that...I don't know much about catmint, but I have perennial geraniums (geranium sanguinaria) growing under two big maple trees where grass wouldn't grow and they have been a labour-saver for me. After the initial work of putting them in, they are zero maintenance. They blossom with pale pink flowers in the early summer and after that, nada, but they stay fresh and green no matter how dry it gets. I put wood mulch around them and I think that helps...
Why don't you try one of the David Austen roses by your little fence? They bloom through the summer and are very hardy?
Your house looks fresh and inviting -- I would take the easy way out with the yard until kids are bigger ;)
I wonder on the side pics if I should dig around all the trees I suppose and then leave the grass -?
Yes I know my little fence idea didn't quite work. I wanted a tall rose bush by the back of the pie white fence but sadly it did not make it. :(
Yikes
