The bathroom in my new apt needs a facelift. I want to replace the WALL tiles with an alternative WALL COVERING other than ceramic tiles or paint. any suggestions for a waterproof, hygenic material?? ie cement or a plaster that can be used in a bathtub area. the tiles are too old to upgrade or repair and too high maintenance. the walls are 11 ft high so I need something that wont cost too much. the apt was built in 1870 and very little upgrade has been done - so I am guessing its jiprock behind the tiles. Any suggestions would be appreciated. My landlord is only going to do patch work that wont resolve the asthestics.

the surround would be just for the tub area. if you mean tiles in the bathroom or on the floor, i don't know.
will your landlord let you cover them with anything?
not sure how much you want to invest in it if you are just renting, but you can buy a surround that will cover the walls. you can get one that covers the ceiling too, but if it is 11 ft high, you won't need to worry about that.
there are tons of different designs and colours for surrounds, they are easy to install and very easy to clean and care for.
