Hello, I'm looking for ideas on how to update the exterior of my newly purchased 70's, Georgian inspired home. Unfortunately it has dated pink brick. I'd love to paint it, but I'm not so sure it's a good idea. Some people loved the look of painted brick, others say it's a tragedy!
I'd love to bring this house back to it's Georgian roots. White brick, black shutters and a beautiful red door. But, dare I paint the brick?
New House
Any thoughts?

I do have a painted brick home. It is the smoother brick and has been painted for 18 years and does not need to be repainted yet. I agree that you will have to repaint occassionally but if you follow insructions and know what you are doing you will not have a problem.
Neighbours have painted their homes since we did although they probably thought we were making a mistake when we did ours.
Once you paint/stain the brick, you need to maintain it or it starts to look like crap. I would advise against it. I would paint the shutters black for sure (pick a softer black like black bean soup or a greyer black)- do that before doing anything with the brick. Also, paint the front door red (pick a red that may compliment the pink) or even soft black. You may like the change enough to not worry about the bricks. If you want a statement front door, is there any possiblility of removing the double storm door? I do not think you will get the impact you expect because the glass from the storm door will hide the colour.
Otherwise, I think the house looks great. The landscaping looks in pretty good shape - nothing over grown, etc. Once the two urns by the front door is filled with flowers/plants, etc., I think it will look finished.
P.S. If you really want to cover the pink brick, go to a paint store like Sherwin Williams and inquire as to a stain that would cover brick. I know they make a concrete stain that penetrates into the concrete instead of staying on the surface. Stain will stay on alot longer than paint and comes in solid or semi transparent. I am just not sure about the smoother, glossy surface of brick if that is what you have.
