I'm getting drywall repairs!

It may not sound too exciting, but I'm just thrilled! I'm going to get all the drywall troublespots that kept me from painting fixed up so I can move forward and paint some rooms. Some of you might remember the mirrored wall in my LR that has panelling behind that-GETTING THAT DRYWALLED! In addition to that, I have an old 70's intercom leaving a hole in each:

-my kitchen
-3 bedrooms
-family room

That's getting fixed up too!

Oh, there's also a big hole in the kitchen wall where a fancy 70's wallmount phone backplate was, and that was hard one because I couldn't make up my mind if I wanted another wall phone there or not. If you look at the kitchen picture below, you can see the phone cord coming out from the hole covered with my son's school art, right next to the ugly intercom. Anyway, we removed that backplate and threw it out, but plugged the phone into the jack and just set it on the floor until now. Finally I decided to get an old wall phone off eBAy, so that plan for that huge hole is to close it up and install the telephone cable box there. The phone is a black Western Electric 554 with a rotary dial, from the 60's. I was thinking of getting a red one, but I chickened out and got black to be safe. If I change my mind later I can always get a red one later, and install the black one in my laundry room.

So there you have it-I'm elated over smooth walls and a really old phone! My next challenge is baseboards-gotta get some of those!

I can't wait until it is done! I have to set a date sometime this week.

So true about the weight of the handset on this phone. We always had the desk models when I spent forever on the phone as a teen, and I remember having to switch ears a lot because of the stiff neck.

I'm looking forward to the familiar sound of the old ring, and the look on the kids' faces when they use the metal rotary dial for the first time. I'll be sure to invite DH"s friends upstairs for a look when it's installed too!

good for you, it is such a good feeling to accomplish these little big jobs as i call them. When we were filling holes in the kitchen, we thought we might as well repair all the holes i made in the walls hidden behind pictures.... :D so now all my holes that were hidden are now filled and touched up. Good luck, you are on your way.

a telecommunications company - you could have parties and his work mates could sit around and admire the 'oldie but goodie'. I have a rotary dial phone in the LR - it has better sound than any other phone in the house and I always buy the top quality phones. The oldies had much better sound, imo. Now the weight, that's a different story. Try holding that heavy handset for 2 or 3 hours.

I know, the red phone really had my attention. It would have been perfect as my 'hotline'! The colour I want to try on the walls is BM hawthorne yellow, and I've seen yellow kitchens in magazines that use red accents which looked perfect. I'll have to see-might end up getting a red one too!

DH laughed out loud when I told him about my phone choice. Not only is he a techie that likes the wee phones with all the bells and whistles, he works for a telecommunication company. I think he said something like, "wait until my friends at work hear about this".

Get a red phone - I love the idea of a red phone. You're right, that old system had to go. Drywall may not be glamous but it's going to change your house and then you'll make it glamorous.

I stomp on the floor 3 times to get the attention of anyone downstairs
LOL - I used to do that when the kids were in the basement. If I was down and they were up I used to bang to the ceiling with the broom. For some reason both of these things used to amuse them and they'd show up. Funny how their hearing was gone when I used to call them.

It's never worked properly. Besides, I already ripped off the fabric that was on it when I was cleaning it, and I tossed some of the knobs too. Besides, it's just not pretty. Eventually I was thinking I might put a large framed blackboard on that wall-not sure yet.

We're all pretty good yellers, but sometimes we just use the regular phone and call someone in another room by dialing our own number, waiting for the beepy sound, and pressing the button to hang up which makes the phone ring. Often though I stomp on the floor 3 times to get the attention of anyone downstairs when it's time for dinner. One day when my knees go I'll get a nice big brass bell with a tassel on it or something, like they use at the produce stand when they call someone out from the back to do a carry-out. Or, maybe I could get a nice doorbell in the kitchen that 'dings' downstairs-that could work!

Why are you taking out the intercom my sIL has one and she loves it uses it all the time no yelling to get DH to come for dinner.
