Every time I look or think of the pool, I just feel ill. We have worked with every kind of contactor you can think of and I feel I am a good judge of character; we have only had great results. With the pool I screwed up major. I take the blame, no references ect… My daughter was getting married in October and I wanted it in fast, so I thought. I just signed on the dotted line and wrote the cheques. The price was relative to a few other companies I checked out for a 40x16 in ground pool. .
With the pool not being level was a huge headache. They were going to pull it out and re level it. The guy who put it in wanted to charge the pool company to redo it and they were not getting another dime from me. They instead put a copping around the pool to make it look like it is level (My son cut his foot very badly on the sharp edge.) He tried to charge me for that too but then he said he had some leftover for another job. Had it happened before?
When the gravel supplier came to drop off extra stone for the concrete to be poured he asked us for the money because the credit card was declined. It was under $100. I just laughed and said sorry.
Maybe in a few years I will pull it out and have it reinstalled. But this summer I will just sit on my deck and drink a few coolers.
Get everything in writing before you start. ... time frame, concrete costs etc. Many pool companies will start your pool and then go off and work on 2-3 +others. Sometimes their are extra costs ie concrete. Ask for the concrete invoice before agreeing that it costs as much as the pool company is asking for. Whoever yells the loudest, gets theirs completed first.
If at all possible DO NOT pay in full until you are complete and satified! That includes clean up, concrete decking, heater etc. Also ask for warrantees...you will need them!....from pool cover, lining, heater, pump, etc.
My pool company tried to pull the delay on me. That's when I started screaming. Believe me, for my aggravation, they waited 6 months for their final payment. The money hurts them the most.
56,000 upfront is overboard!!!?!!! And did not include heater and electrical!!?!!!
We had a hole for a month, the pool was not level when installed (still not), and the concrete was poured two months later (with a finish a five year old could have made). It was fun cleaning the concrete out of the pool. I am still undecided what to do with the four foot high dump of concrete they left behind.
You will need electrical to pool, pool shed and landscaping and a proper fence.
The pool cost 56,000 upfront. This did not include heater or electrical ect.
Frustation priceless

Thanks for posting your experience. When I called San Juan they told the would have the pool installed and ready for swimming in less than a week.
Why did it take your installers over 4 months??? That's scary. I have been getting many quotes for vinyl and fibreglass and I was suprised that most compaines to include running hydro and gas lines in their costs.
We are still undecided in what route to take. It 's such a big decision to make, I want to make sure I take the time to think about it and educate myself first.
Thanks for everyone's replies!

We had a Viking pool (fiberglass) installed last summer the pool is great, the installers were a nightmare! Started in May finished Sept.

DH has been building pools for many years and often sells kits to homeowners. As to doing an install only, many experienced companies would prefer to sell the kit and do the installation at cost. Some customers want to help with the labour and that can save them a lot of money.
Good luck! It'll be fun to have a pool.
We had an 16x32 inground pool installed this past year by a company called Backyard Getaways. Their base price was the most reasonable we received. They also do stamped concrete etc..
We have an above ground pool that we had installed 7 years ago, 12' x 24' it was the best 3,000.00 we have ever spent. We have a wrap around cedar deck with a 5' privacy panels around it. which was another $6,000.00
We had decided that since we really only have about 3 months of good weather to use the pool we would not put an inground pool in but put the above ground in instead. We have a friend that purchased a pool from Back Yard Pools, their pool is 1/2 in the ground and 1/2 above the ground so it looks like an inground pool but doesn't come with the price tag.
The beauty with our pool is that since the kids don't use it much any more (13 & 15 yrs) we will be able to tear it down in 2 yrs time. Reuse the deck wood and put something else up in the yard or just have grass.
Thanks for everyone's responses.
When I say pool kit...I don't mean DIY...we wouldn't be taking that on.
However, I have heard of companies that sell pool kits and you can hire a contractor to have it installed.
I was wondering if anyone has ever done that and was it less expensive than going the conventional route of hiring a pool company such as Pioneer etc.?
theredfarm..we put in an inground this past summer....we put in a fibreglass pool from sanjuan pools....they started the dig on a Wednesday and the pool was in on Friday. PM me for any other info you need.

Im guessing anywhere between 30 and 40k. Years ago mine was 30K. You will need a fence as well.
Have it done professionally. Never heard of kits ...is that a DIY?
As far as I know a new pool that is decent wouild be around 30,000.
Also something to think about is salt water pools. Apparently there is no need for chemicals.
When we built our pool many years ago we were told to stay away from the kits.
Always check BBB before you decaide on a company and talk to your neighbors.
