Installing wall sconces - difficult?

I have a very tiny powder room in my house. It is basically just a toilet and a pedistal sink. I will be removing the builder's mirror and replacing it with a new framed mirror and would like sconces on either side.

IMO the builder put the current lighting fixture too high anyway so I am thinking this is a good opportunity to make a change.

Is this something I could do myself?

If I had to have an electrician do it, what kind of costs might I be lookign at?

TIA.

Do ask around. We did, and found an electrician who does a little work on the side in his own time, and he charges around $35 an hour. I don't recall a minimum for hours with him, but we usually save up a few things to have done when he visits so it's usually 2 hours or more anyway.

Did you check the walls with a studfinder to see if any wall studs will foil your plans? (don't know if they would for sure, just thought I'd ask)

I'd probably hire someone. Assuming a hole would be left where the old fixture was-I might hire someone to do that too.

they may be like the electrician I just had here and have a minimum like 2 hours. Those guys are so fast, it's worth figuring out all the other electrical they could be doing for any minimum so you get your money's worth. The one I had, cost $75/hr so $150 for the minimum.

Hi Leslie,

This is not a job for an amateur. If you were only replacing the current fixture I would say absolutely, but reconfiguring the wiring and running wire etc. Nope!

Also, an electrician has all the proper tools and will be able to do the job in 1/4 the time it would take you.

Are there any other electrical jobs you need done? Electricians usually charge a minimum, and you may as well take advantage of his time. This is NOT accurate but $50 - 80 an hour seems reasonable.

i would have to agree with obella....wiring unless you have alot of knowledge isnt something you may want to do yourself....good luck

Leslie,
I'm not sure of costs but I would hire an Electrician.
Maybe you could ask friends for a referral.
If you were just replacing the current fixture that would be a different story, but having to create new holes and have them positioned just right, finding the wires etc. sounds like something for a professional.
