Jenjen reminded me of a question.....

Does anyone own an ipod? ...ipod shuffle in particular.

I believe there is a ipod nano..more expensive, more features, then the shuffle...
I'm trying to find out for my sister....wondering if the shuffle is good or spend the extra $$$ to upgrade.

hope this makes sense........

My son was VERY pleased indeed with his Nano. He is 15, and so there was no jumping or squealing, but he had a huge happy grin that still has not left his face.

He never would have asked me for such an expensive thing. It was nice to surprise him.

According to my son and stepson, the Apple products are superior because of the number of songs they are able to store. The Nano I bought will, apparently, store 1,000 songs (and here I thought it was "only" 500). They claim to know what they are talking about.

do know that IPOD is a name brand of an mp3 player and i have spoken to them about this and they are just as happy to have any name brand mp3 player....there is no way i could afford 3 of them and not sure i would with the troubles i have heard from some many that already own them....future shop told me yesterday there is a better warranty on the ones we bought then on the IPODS...which was real surprising

My Ipod was free and I love it. I also loved the BENQ I had before it. Most of the time I am drowning out what is playing anyway so I don't notice the quality as much. I'm pretty sure that the quality is only as good as the earphones you play them on and the quality of the download. No matter the device used to play them MP3 probably sound the same.

basically the current version of the "Walkman"...

Just as the Sony Walkman was the first product of its kind, and many similar ones at various price points followed, the Ipod is probably the best known, made by Apple in various levels of features with associated price points, other manufacturers also make MP3 players (MP3 is a type of computer audio file)

some allow storing a gazillion songs, grouped by folders according to the users preferences (i.e. you could group them by style, by artist, by activity i.e. treadmill music - lawn raking music - Jenjen's painting music) - easier to bring to a party or cottage than a case of CDs - accessories include car adapters, small speakers so you can use it as a min-stereo, etc...

the higher end models that store the data on a tiny hard drive also allow storing computer files on them, like a giant floppy disk - handy for people that often need to carry large files from one computer to another

another related term that turns up more and more is the PodCast - basically a downloadable broadcast, often talk radio stuff, that you can then listen to on your daily commute to work/school but being able to stop/start/rewind, and listen to in the subway, which you can't do with radio)

Well it is fine to say to buy that brand but if you have 2-3 kids all wanting an MP3 player the normal household cannot afford this. Now if they wanted to meet you half way with some of their hard earned money that would be a different story. I know my grandkids pay 1/2 of their hard earned cash towards an item if they want something pricey or a brand name . It is not that the parents cannot afford to pay the whole shot, it is all about learning.....and management and respect and all that good stuff... LOL

janet I know your kids will love what you chose for them... :)

"If you are buying for a young person DEFINITELY buy the Apple brand products...that is what they are after."

Apple products include IPOD, IPOD Nano, IPOD Mini, and the IPOD SHUFFLE. The IPOD SHUFFLE is at a great price point for a superior product.

A word of caution on the Lyra, I had one and within 6 months it was broken. They are made of cheap plastic...where the battery goes there is a little latch and it snapped off....wouldn't hold the battery...so it went in the garbage.

I noticed this Koss mp3 player on the sears outlet site. It seems to have the fm radio, voice recording, 256mb expandable memory, etc for $69.94. I don't know if this is a good one or not but I know Sears offers a 1 year warranty (and also price matches). Here is the link with more details... http://sears.ca/cgi-bin/so_itm.cgi?lang=e&id=19&cid=19&pd=n&eventID=0&deptID=0&itemID=258215&qtycount=&day=0&hr=0&fv=

I bought my DD an RCA Lyra 256mb and she likes it. She was greatful to get one and didn't mind it wasn't an iPOD. It takes a AAA battery that lasts 20 hours and has an expandable memory. She did have some problems with it, but Sears replaced it with no problem AND since it was now cheaper than when I first bought it, I got some money back too. The Lyra i bought doesn't have the radio or voice recorder but I don't think she would use those options much anyway.

My dd has an ipod mini....loved it until it got stolen at school along with the cellphone and faux Louis Viuton purse. Luckily her dear old mom (me) :) felt sorry for and replaced it. If you are buying for a young person DEFINITELY buy the Apple brand products...that is what they are after.

My consumer Report mag. rates this one from Creative Zen as a best buy.

Budget MP3 player. The Zen Nano beats the iPod Shuffle in this price class and sounds great, say experts. It comes in eight different colors (including pink and orange) and doesn't skimp on features, with an FM tuner, LCD display, voice recorder and line-in recording -- all features missing on the competing iPod shuffle. It runs 19 hours on a single AAA battery. Experts say the Zen Nano Plus is the best inexpensive lightweight flash player -- it weighs just 1.3 ounces. Its 512MB memory holds about 60 songs.

There are a few things to consider as they come either HD or flash player.
HD's have moving parts and are subject to bouncing around if you jog or use it at the gym. They also tend to be way pricier. Batteries are $$$ and cannot be recharged.

Flashplayers have no moving parts and can take the bouncing around without skipping. ( can be used while snow boarding, skiiing etc. ) Rechargeable batteries. The case is often smaller in size.
It also depends on how largea collection of music you want to store on a MP3 player. Do you want to store photos as well?

When you download music from a site make sure your MP3 player is compatable with the files on that site also.

I feel there is an MP3 player out there for everyone and why pay for more features than you will ever use . Shop around as stores often will meet another store sale price.
Have fun :)

the salesman that i spoke to said that you are better off with the mps players that take normal batteries as he said once the built in ones let go, you are done...i was surprised to hear that and he sells the IPODs at his store

Condogirl, he loves it. i got it for him for his birthday last May, uses it daily at the gym and on the train commuting.

Sunshn, both my mp3 player and my DH's have excellent sound quality. Based on my research the Ipods, etc have only average sound quality compared to many mp3 players on the market. Personally I prefer to not use a propriority battery, especially if it requires docking to charge. I carry a single spare AA battery that I can pop in in case I run out of batteries, instead of having to get it home, dock, charge before I can use it again. And a single AA battery will last at least 30 hours.

I have the iPod shuffle, and adore the little guy!

I guess it depends on what you want the mp3 player for. For me, it was for working out. I don't need to scroll through my playlists and pick my favourite songs and read the display. I upload my favourite workout music and go. If I wanted to upload my entire music library (and categorize the genres etc.) then I'd go for the bigger storage mp3 player (with screen display).

Yes, more features are available on other non-ipod machines (for less $$) but is the sound quality the same? Something worth checking out. As well, the built-in battery in the iPods are rechargeable. Not sure if the others are similar....

Hope this helps!

and has learned that the warranty is excellent. His has been twice replaced, free of charge, once to address a manufacturing defect and the second time because he broke the screen doing something slightly foolish.

Speaking of slightly foolish, I may be: I just bought my son the Nano as a gift for his birthday tomorrow. It appealed to me because it is so very tiny - he is actually quite a modest kid and he could slip the thing in his pocket or clip it to his belt, where it would be unseen. The trouble with the Nano at the moment is the lack of accessories - I want to buy him a lanyard and a case and there are none to be found in Edmonton!

I really know nothing about this technology other than that the Nano version I bought holds about 500 songs, depending on the length of the songs. The kids seem to know a lot about these things - I will let you know what my son says about his gift tomorrow!

I agree with condogirl. My husband has a YP-F1 and I have an iriver myself. Ipods are overrated and too expensive for what they are. You're just paying for the Ipod name. There are many better other MP3 players out there that will give you better value with better features.

condogirl's picture

I would not recomend the Ipod Shuffle, it doesnt have a screen, so dumb. The nano, well it has a bunch of its own issues, its over priced and there are ton of reports on how the screens keep breaking, or cracking. I have one of the new Samsung YP-F1, its a smaller than a shuffle, it comes with a belt clip built right in I use it to clip it to my purse! Oh and it has interchangable face plates so I can change it match what ever I am wearing! It all so has a built in FM radio, and a voice recorder!
