Hi Suzie, I have had good luck tranplanting and dividing hosta over the years and have found that spring is the best time... especially for the smaller plants that you may find when you dig up the root ball. These little guys do well in pots. I water them more often and keep them right out of the sun and their roots develop faster. They are in much better shape by September and gives them a head start for the next spring. Large plants are much hardier for transplanting - just try to keep as much dirt around the roots as you can and soak their new location before planting. Norm

You can pretty much move hostas anytime but I would suggest doing the following:

• move on a cloudy day or in the evening when the sun is down.
• water the hosta well before you move it.
• loosen dirt around the "rootball" with a pitch fork if you have one (otherwise use a shovel).
• if it is quite large, you can "split" it down the center by cutting with a sharp knife.
• move to new location and water well.

Sorry Suzie I haven't been around much but I've been busy in my garden!

I transplanted mine last year in the middle of summer and although it didn't looks so good at the end of the summer it looks great this spring.
