I set up a thread about my Japanese Maple and my boston Ivy during the Spring Planting forum with Mark and Marjorie. Great advice as both have since bloomed. My question is about my Japanese Maple it doesn't have as many leaves as it did last year. It has leafed out but I think it looks sparse nothing compared to the others that I have seen in my area. Is this normal? The tree was bought last year so it is only 2 years in the ground on the north/east side of my backyard.
I have planted it in front of my air conditioner to try and muffle the sound it is approximately 4-6 feet in front of the air conditioner but I have only recently turned the AC on, and it hasn't lost any leaves since the AC has been turned on so I don't think that, that is the problem
Any advice

That sucks it is a big job having to take it out but with that much damage I wouldn't want it.
that's what i was told as well to go with a hardier variety. they will be able to show you at the nursery what is appropriate. as i mentioned in one of my posts i went with a flame amur maple to take the wind and full exposure.
good luck, i know how disappointing it is ...
and explained to them what the tree looks like. The man told me that the branches that haven't leafed out are damaged from the winter. He suggested trimming it back and if the tree still looked okay to keep it. I think I should take it back since more than half of the tree did not leaf out.
Should I get another one or something maybe a little bit hardier?
Take a picture of it before you dig it out and haul it all the way back. I took a picture of one of mine and e mailed it to them and they were able to give suggestions and it worked. Mine was a split but it will save you having to dig it out if they can help it .
It started off doing so well or so I thought and then I don't know what happened to it
well if it looks like it's not doing well then i would take it back for another variety of maple or at least for some of their advice on what to do to make it better.
You think I should take it back to the nursery?

hey how is the jap maple making out? did you find out what was wrong with it?ironically i had to return mine for the same conditions you described. it was disappointing but it just wouldn't have done well in the exposed location i had it in. so while at the nursery they showed me speciman alternatives and i ended up with a maple flame amur. it has small leafy showy branches and grows slowly much like a jap maple only it is green not red. i was assured that is could take the windy spot and full sun location. it's looking really good...i just thought i'd share that with you!:D-
thing i can think of is did it get any winter protection this past winter. i know that it is recommended that they are wrapped with burlap to protect from the chilly winds, they don't like unprotected areas where the elements can get to them. some varieties are hardier like the bloodgood is hardiest in our zone. do the leaves look crispy at the edges? have any fallen off? perhaps if you can dig it up and bring it in to the nursery they can advise you better.
Anyone else have any advice?
My one year guarantee is almost up so I need some help
Do you think something is wrong with the tree?
bought my FIL a japanese maple for fathers day from Superstore...it too wasn't too full...but he does have a few other Crismon King Maples that have been planted for 2 years now and are finally looking full and lush...maybe it's still getting it's roots established...i don't think your AC would affect it either...i know that red maple trees are slow growing compared to regular green maple trees...atleast that's what i'm finding with mine....i have 3 maples used to be 4 but DH removed one so the dump truck could navigate the turn...but the 2 green maples are huge and the red one is about 1/2 the size and they were all planted at the same time about 9-10 years ago...sorry i wasn't much help...did you try to search the net for info on them.....
