Has anyone ever had their granite countertops checked for radon emissions??

I noticed City News is doing a news segment on 'gambling with granite'

Could the latest trend of granite in your kitchens be cooking up cancer ?

Well you never know with some natural stones.

True story, when I was a kid we moved to a uranium town and they had found uranium leaching in the drinking water from the mines. At the time they just told everyone to boil their water before drinking it...uranium, radio active uranium.. just boil it away. that water was what people were swimming in at the beach too.

We lived there a few years and weren't all that worried about it but a few months after we moved back to Calgary my dad arrived home in the middle of the day with a gieger counter and started going through the house and putting some things in a lead lined container. We had had radio active stuff sitting on shelves, by the dinner table, in the living room, and he was just fit to be tied at the exposure we had had.

You have to understand too that my dad was a mining research scientist for the gov't so he was the guy who had to warn all the others and his job was ensuring safety and here he hadn't even been told of the dangers until that point. Apparently that town ended up going house to house to see if they detected radio activity and if they found it (some homes were built on top of veins of uranium) they had to condemn the houses. Those houses had been lived in for over 30 years at that point. Up until then they thought as long as it wasn't fully processed uranium and was in it's natural state was fine. They know better now.

I've heard about this. General concensus seems to be that there is no real science to back up the claims. If you use the "right" tests and reporting you can "proove" just about anything, as we all know! Whatever the ground breaking new development is in anything I always try to think about who might have funded the "research". Remember, Dow chemicals and others like them, are the ones who make the plastics in laminate counters. There's definitely big money with a vested interest in scaring people away from natural stone counters, which have really exploded in popularity and taken market share from these huge manufacturers.

I never would have thought of that. I guess it's one less reason to feel bad I can't afford granite, lol.
