Kids storage, black ok?

itsjustme's picture

Dh is in the process of building these storage systems from Ikea. The space we have in the boys bedroom is bigger or narrower than the frames from Ikea, so I have bought the tubs, and dh is making the frames from MDF. It is going to look amazing.

One system is going where the chest is, sorry had to erase my son off the red cushion, lol. And the tall one is going inside the 'tunnel' on the right, which goes in deep running over the stairs (behind the window). I am thinking of painting blackboard in there too on the right wall. They love this tunnel.

Now my question is, can I paint the frames in black? The Ikea ones are white, but the boys (and I) thought black would be cool. The buckets are blue, red, white and green. Drapes are red and khaki, bedding blue/red, walls a light khaki (BM Carrington Beige)

Thanks everyone. A week and no toys on the floor. Either they are tidying up, or it looks so nice no one is playing with the toys, lol.

They turned out really well and I like the final colour choices. they look like they will always be really useful units even long after the toys are out of the picture.

Wow, great job. Isn't it nice to have it all pulled together. Now to get the kids to use the bins....;)

oh, and now more space on DS shelf by his bed for all his Transformers! I think we have all of them now, lol

I will paint this shelf too in the Mortar when I redo the bookcase.

And it is done! Thanks for all the help and ideas.
I painted inside the black Onyx, and the outside the Mortar.
Amazing difference! The toys have a place to go, easy to clean up, and even a bonus space for displaying special crafts or toys. It actually makes the room seem much bigger, with the red wall inside the 'tunnel' leading your eye through, and the black wall making it seem deeper.

Before (imagine toys piled up high in the tunnel, lol)

And after...

Almost done! Will post soon. It looks amazing so far!

Great to hear you have the same colour palette. Is the furniture black too? Can you post a pic of the room for me? Would be greatly appreciated.

I would love to be able to post a picture. However, the burglars have both of my digital cameras.
I painted the trim and shelves black, the walls taupe (general paint CL 2673W). He has a loft bed and I was to lazy to paint it - but it matches the hardwood floors in his room.

I have bought the paint. I agree with the last layout too. thanx Magnolia.
I bought BM Mortar for the outside, and BM Onyx for inside. The first coat of red on the wall is done, with Sico.
I'll post after pics,

Thank you ALL for great tips, ideas and help :clapping:

I really like the very last mock up. Practical and yet looks great!

That is exactly like I was thinking. I really like it.

Magnolia, like this?

I found another chip in my collection of chips.

It is BM Mortar. Sico was limited in khaki colours, so I might have to drive further to get some BM samples.

The colours are not showing up right on my monitor.

Why don't you go back to the idea of black inside and use the lighter colour on the outside? Black and taupe look great together. Then you could still have the black wall behind the one on the right.

As for the dusting. Yup it does show the dust more. My DS is 9 and needs to dust his own room. I bought him one of those swifter duster things.

I like the last mock up you did, with the red paint on wall and the units the color you have in the last mock up under window.

It's made from MDF, so no wood grain.
I got some Sico paint chips. There are some darker chips of the blind colour. ' Medieval Manuscript is spot on, so a darker shade would be 'Cardboard'. Egyptian Papyrus is also nice but lighter than the blind.

If you want to go more neutral what about just staining the pieces either the colour of the bunk bed or the rest of the furniture? that would save you from introducing another element if you'd rather not and it looks like those pieces are made of nice enough wood to do that.

Obviously I haven't even started painting yet, as I am still on here! lol
Making final decisions is so hard!

So the other unit is in. Dh still thinks the black is going to be too harsh. The room is neutral khaki with red accents, so maybe we should paint the units a neutral too?

The walls are BM Carrington Beige, and the darker colour on that chip is Danville Tan. It matches the roman blind perfectly.

Are we being too conservative? Our concern is black can be too overpowering in a small room. (even though black goes well with khaki)

Here's a now pic and a mockup.

I vote for all black. Great job btw.

Looks great!! My vote is for all black.

I think I like the all-black version best. White is nice too, but I think the room would be great with a bit of black here and there. This is a great opportunity for it.

I love the extra 'tunnel' space on the side. What a great spot for a kid's room! I would have LOVED that in my room when I was small.

IJM... white is going to get scrape marks where the tubs rub against the case... and if the whole thing is white, I see fingerprints darkening the edges. I vote for all black :)

By the way... I like the red stripes at the top of your roman blind... what do you think about putting a two matching red stripe somewhere in the last visible fold? Or perhaps you could actually sew a wide red trim across the bottom hem. I think it would make the shade tie in with the read wall a whole lot better!

or all Black?

And now for the final decision...

Black or White....in other words...Dark or Light?

The unit is in!
