kitchen cabinet fronts

I am having problems finding a company that will do only cabinet doors and drawers. I am moving into a new house that is 12 years old and the cabinets are very outdated. They are a pickled oak with a traditional look. I am going modern and want to change the doors then have them sprayed white or something light Does anyone in the Vancouver area know where I can have this done?? If the cabintet doors were plain or shaker then I would just have them sprayed but there is know way I can make them look modern without replacing them. The cabinet boxes are in great shape so I only need to doors and drawers.

Hi,

Nothing defines the style of your kitchen cabinets like the door. Cabinet overlays, woods, and finishes are also important, but the cabinet door design anchors the overall look and style.Kitchen cabinetry can do much to attract by these factors to consider quality, symmetry, color and layout also.  Thank you

Hipmaman,

What is that mocha colour leading out to the back door at your place, I keep seeing that colour? I like what you have done to the kitchen, it looks really neat.

Mocha? I hope I got the right area, but the colour in the eat-in area leading to the back yard is BM Ginger Root CC-274

Thanks for the compliment. I can now overlook the backspash too. Contemplating changing the countertop though.

Hipmaman,

Thanks for posting the MSN link, it was nice seeing everybody's house and the decor they've done. Jenjen.....what a large piece of land you have, and who is the member called Angel?

That one hell of a house you have angel, and no one could have guessed that was an IKEA kitchen.

Love it, really love it.

I can't help with the actual places to get them painted in Vancouver, but I had our very traditional oak doors 'modernised' by getting them painted as you plan to. I'm quite happy with the results and the project didn't cost an arm and a leg. I don't even notice the top curves on the doors anymore (which bother me a great deal along with the oak grains, lol)

I was just going thru the Home Depot flyer.
I know Jenjen mentioned them, and you yourself said they weren't much help.
But I did notice until the end of Jan. they have 10% off refacing.
May be worth another go.

maybe you should call a few generic refinishers who refinish furniture and such. they routinely spray with lacquer (note: it's not the finish but the type of paint. if sarah was spraying cabinet doors, it was most likely done in a satin finish, but lacquer paint). also, custom colours shouldn't be a huge price increase either - usually it adds 10-15% to a job. i can't believe that company gave you so much grief!

I guess Vancouver BBB doesn't wade through their listing to see who is still around or not.

I know what you mean Andrea about trying to source places for ideas that you've seen on a show or in a magazine. It can be very frustrating and I think a lot of times it is about the connections of who you know - which is what I'm learning is a big part of what Decorators do for a living. So that they *can* implement the ideas they come up with.

I'm sorry I don't have any further suggestions, however perhaps some others in the forum will have some ideas.

I tried the two places Jainey listed but the phone numbers now belong to Telus. They could be out of business. I found another place near me who just does cabinet refacing. I spoke with her yesterday and they have painted doors but you would choose would they already sell. I asked her about wanting them sprayed a paticular color and she said that would be really custom and a lot more money. It's paint for god sakes how expensive could it be!! I also told her I wanted it in a laquer finish which is what Sarah Richardson did on one of her episodes. She acted like that would be a big mistake and that the paint would eventually rub away with use. Any comments on this?? I find that as soon as you go out of a companies comfort zone they act like what you are asking is a weird request. It seems so difficult to get an idea from a magazine or t.v. show and actually find it in the "real" world.

i have been having a similar issue with my doors as well. i need to get the doors replaced (great cabinets box configuration), but kitchen companies don't like to do this anymore. if they do, they often upcharge to make it worth their while. i have had it suggested to me that a millright/carpenter/general contractor is the best route. they will just make them for you. if you are going to have them sprayed anyway, you could just have them made from a cheaper material, like mdf if you are looking to save some money too.

however, that being said, if the contacts that jainey listed actually make the doors too, that would be a convenient one stop shop too!

Thank you so much for finding those places. I will give them a try. I did try Home Depot but they weren't at all very helpful.

By doing a search of Vancouver's BBB - they had two companies listed with refacing in their name:

Lukes Refacing
128 11860 Hammersmith Wy
Richmond, BC V7A 5G1
Telephone: (604) 250-4645

and

Western Cabinet Refacing Plus Ltd
PO Box 19604
Vancouver, BC V5T 4E7
Telephone: (604) 872-8894
Fax: (604) 873-8641

I have no idea what the quality or ability of these companies are - although neither had complaints listed agasint them by the BBB.

Hope that is helpful.

There are a lot of places with "Cabinet" in their name. Go to http://www.bbbvan.org to check it out for yourself. :D
