We just purchased a new home and we would like to put in upgrades with the builder, however, since the choices in the selection on granite are limited we were wondering if this combination will be okay for a small 9x9 kitchen.

We were thinking of going with espresso colored maple cabinets and new Caledonia granite that’s mostly black and grey with browns in it with light almost white ceramic tiles on the floor to lighten the look up.

We’re still stumped on the backsplash, we can’t decide whether to go with a very light grey 1” square smooth stone tiles or those mini subway half inch x two inch grey and white stone tiles, or to go with little brown glass tiles, or light blue or white glass tiles.

Will the dark granite and cabinet combination go together without making the kitchen looking any smaller and which backsplash should we use to tie the look all together?

Kitchen SOS, we’re in desperate need of help and we have to decide in a week.

I think the light beige or cream glass tiles would look amazing between the espresso maple cabinets and Caledonia granite counter. Grey would look a little depressing imo.

It is really hard to tell which colour the bottom three are.  I think they are all of the green - hubby's choice.  If these are the only two options, I would pick your choice and still going with the white tiles - I think.  Are the other small backsplash tiles in the picture a kind of grey?  If it is, they could work as well.

Love those grey glass tiles. Grey tile and cabinets, as well as lighter wood cabinets, seem to very on trend. Check our article on Kitchen Trends, as well as our Kitchen Design Guide for inspiration! Lis.

i would go with a large format light grey floor tile and use the grey glass tile backsplash with an accent band of white on the horizontal..have you seen the HGTV green home backsplash..grey and white tiles look great togehter..i think this would give a very sophisticated look and you should use stainless european bar pulls to tie it all together...

I think I would still stick with the white tiles.  You have enough going on in the counter top to add the tumbled marble.  White is always safe.  You can add colour though curtains or accessories set out on the counters.  If I had a choice of glass tile, I think I would take the white on the left but I am not sure how white or blue the one on the right is.  You did not mention any paint colour and maybe you can find a nice light grey or grey/green to paint in the kitchen.

hi thanks for replying, yes it is hard to imagine everything together.  i've posted some pictures to show the samples we are considering.  it's hard to imagine for us cause it's all samples and we don't know how everything is going to turn out all as a whole completed kitchen.

take a look at the pics and let me know what you think. thanks.

It is hard to imagine without pictures.  I think I would stay away from the brown or blue glass tile.  Probably even the grey.  Keep it light between the counter and cabinets.  I am not sure thought between subway or square tiles.  One will look busier than the other with more grout lines.  Can you post pics?
