I've recently bought a Mattamy home that will be built by July 2013. Next week I have my appointment with the design consultant and am unsure of what type of flooring to get for the kitchen. I really like rectangular tiles that are set in a brick pattern but have also seen a lot of kitchens in magazines and renovation shows with hardwood flooring. I love the look of hardwood floors in the kitchen (and it would actually save me some money compared to the rectangular tiles) but am concerned about maintenance and wear and tear. Does anyone have experience with hardwood floors in the kitchen? Any advice?

This is tough! I don't have any personal experience with hardwood in the kitchen. Have you considered wood-look tiles? e.g. http://houseandhome.com/design/photo-gallery-trendy-tile-picks?page=14
We faced the same problem. In the end we opted for cork flooring which has more give to it and cleans up very well. Much softer on the footies.
Hi, I know it's confusing there is so much choice out there. I have wood all over my house and kitchen also. Of course i have an older home so i had no choice if i wanted to keep the old charm of the house but i would'nt use anything else personnally. It's cosy it's never out of style it's a classic. My cupboards are off white. If you want your cupboards to be wood then you woul'nt use wood on the floor cause it would be to much wood and would end up looking like the 70's you don't want that. So it all depends what style you go for. Tiles are also very nice but harder and colder unless you have heated floors. The wear and tear of wood floor in a kitchen is not a problem. And even if you have a scrach you can always fix it with those little markers but don't forget that wood is real and even with it's imerfection that's what makes it even better cause it is natural. Some of my friends have tiles i like it...the only reason why i would'nt use tile...cause i don't like renovating and the style for tile keeps changing...one year it's square the other year they come up with rectangular and when i renovated my house i wanted to be done i wanted something that would never be out of style. The only way you can never be out of style is with real material. So if i was you and you decide to go with tiles ....go with real stone like slate or any kind of real stone...good luck and mostly listen to your heart
