DH is not happy with the condition of our lawn he thinks it is to yellow and patchy. We are going to fertilize for the winter what do you use we are looking at Scotts Wintercare Plus 2 it is a Weed and Feed but have never used it and wonder if it is a good one.

I spoke with them at the nursery today and they say here we need to add iron to the mix for fertilizer that is why it looks pale. We water all summer from early spring and still watering now but not as much and during the winter it rains enough we nearly float so no need to water then. We can only water at night so DH us up and has to move the sprinkler at 5 am so it gets the whole lawn he did that eavery second night all summer. She told me to give it Winter fert. iron now and in Nov. give it lime and then fert. again inthe spring and it should be good to go. We don't get any snow and have very few leaves so mulching isn't something we have to do.
a friend who does lawn care for a living and i do recall her saying that fertilizer and seed gives you the best results in the fall.....and she also told me leave some leaves on the lawn and not cut too short..........we dont use fertilizer, but we do as our friend suggested and our lawn isnt too bad considering we do nothing.

I saw a segment on the news recently about how to prep a lawn for the winter. The guy recommended spreading peat pellets on your lawn. And for a fertilizer, he recommended using one with a high (or is it low?) last number. Crap, can't remember which it is..... well, it's one or the other!! :D
The best thing you can do for your lawn is water it regularly. A lawn needs 1" of water a week to keep it green and healthy. We have an underground sprinkler system that comes on two times a week for a few hours each time. It's on a timer so the watering happens really early in the morning, before the sun gets too hot (well, that's not much of an issue now!!) Our grass is lush and green and there are hardly any weeds.
I can't vouch for brands, but can say that in spring you can always tell the lawns that fertilized in the fall. It really does make a big difference in the lawn and is worth doing.
One nice thing about fall fertilizing is you don't have to water it in ( which is good since as of yesterday Calgary has a watering ban)..
