Less Rosedale houses!

I adore H & H magazine, and eagerly await every month's newest issue. However, lately I've noticed the homes being featured are more Rosedale than Roncesvalles, and many of the products featured are only to be found in snooty, overpriced Yorkville decor stores. In the future, please feature more smaller quarters, especially converted Victorian houses that are everywhere in Toronto (and I'm sure there are many of them across Canada), and decor ideas for the majority of people who cannot afford beyond IKEA.

Keep up the good work!

I agree, as a matter of fact I saw this round rattan mirror in their catalogue that I think would figure perfectly in your decor. It's in the back with all of the other mirrors.

There's nothing wrong with wanting Ikea, over here in the new world I can finally let my secret out of the closet, and just for the record, I obsess equally over the Ikea catalogue as I do over magazines :D What I mind the most about magazines is that they seldom show the whole picture, only a stylized bit of half a sofa or an inch of a table. I want to see everything from every angle and possibly a helicopter shot too.

I have a stonehouse, and a brook, and I have very small windows :D
if I wanted to browse people's Ikea furniture in magazines I would get the Ikea catalogue.

Sometimes, when I look at the pages in the magazine I get a little depressed. My home just seems so...so lived in! I often forget these homes in the magazine have been totally stylized! Then I go over to my friends whose house is a total mess and I say wow my home is awesome!

How I would love a stone cottage, but it would have to have very large windows for me. Most don't when you see them.

Oh to build one by a brook that babbles with wide plank wooden floors and a country kitchen, English garden and all. etc etc.

Nice to dream.

Don't some peasants live in those beautiful stone cottages, that those idiotic rich people end up paying an arm and a leg for? Hail the peasant!!!!

That some budget decorated homes would be nice to include for us peasants to see and get ideas.
Oh well maybe one day they will include some for us.

....Cobi Ladner saying that who really wants to see the house next door. Well I do, because you'll be surprised at the talent and taste of everyday people. There was a show a few years ago called " images of home" with Kathy Renwald that featured houses next door.
It was my favourite!!! The homes were incredible!! Charming, character, well appointed, imaginative, you name it. The people "next door" rule!!!

Perhaps it's because Lynda Reeves lives in Rosedale, and these are all her friends.

Diva, you probably don't want to know what the budget is for most of the homes that we see featured in H&H! I love seeing these homes, but realize that they are way out of my price range. I try to think of creative, inexpensive ways to copy the designer looks that I see. It is definitely a challenge! Some looks would be impossible to copy on a tight budget, especially modern looking kitchen and bathrooms.

I would really like to see an article in the magazine which shows a typical reader's home being transformed, step by step, with the costs included. Most people need help knowing where to start, and say if you had $100, $500, $1000, etc., to spend, the article could show how to get the most bang for your buck.

Also agree and disagree. What I really would like to know is the budget for decorating these homes. Just to know how the other half spends their money.

Most of the expensive pieces are available as knock offs if you know where to go.
I've found that you can get nice things at good prices at stores like Homesense, Pier 1, Home Outfitters. Pottery Barn is soooo nice, but most items are out of my price range.

I must say that I agree and disagree! Agree, since the House and Home magazine features many custom built and professionally decorated homes that are rather out of reach for an average person. On the other hand, they also feature small condos and have workshops that show you how to build something nice inexpensively. In addition, in my opinion a magazine is to inspire and to illustrate the best of the best. What would be the point if all pages are filled with IKEA furnished homes!
