Lighting rules or guidelines?

I'm gearing up for a "real" shopping trip to the lower mainland and Van. Island in a couple of weeks - I say real because most of the time that I get to the city, it's for work, which means flying, which in turn means limited space to bring things back! This time I'm going for a visit with friends and family, and I'm driving. Space will still be limited, but I'll be able to buy things that are larger than a potholder :D

I'm planning on hitting most of the big box home stores (ikea, linens n things, homesense, home outfitters, jysk). One of my many decor dilemmas is lighting - right now I've got one lamp in my living room. I have bought exactly 3 lamps in my life, and 2 of them were those $5 plastic halogen desk lamps! I just don't know how to chose a lamp to save my life! In my quest for a "modern coastal beach cottage chic" living space I'm thinking of either brushed stainless based lamps or clear glass based lamps with white shades....or maybe a combo of both? If I were to combine them, I'd probably do 2 of the same type of base flanking my couch, and the other finish next to a chair.....

Oh, and there is currently ugly GIGANTIC track lighting on the LR area ceiling, which I'd like to replace with a ceiling fan without a light - just need to find the right one.

Your thoughts? Are there any lighting rules or guidelines I should be keeping in mind?
