Lilacs are tough and prefer not to be spoiled (see them growing on the side of the 401!). Ours are growing in heavy wet clay in the backyard and regular topsoil in the frontyard and both do well. I have successfully transplanted them in the past by ripping up suckers and sticking them in a hole - no preparation or after care.

Last year, after they bloomed, my husband thinned ours with a chainsaw, and threw the branches in the back field. Right now, those branches have leaves, and buds. If they bloom I will send you a picture.

You can't go wrong.
