Looking for moving advice

I mentioned this in another post but thought it could be it's own subject.

For those who have moved (and paid themselves since that seems to make a big difference in how you look at it) what would you not bother to take now and what do you wish you had moved?

I am thinking of things that weigh quite a bit or are more trouble to pack than they are worth. For instance I was told it costs about $150/box for china to be packed and moved. now that may be worth it for good china or sentimental stuff but for my $36 set or the Mikasa I've had for years and never really liked I am not so sure I should be taking it since it would cost less than that to replace it all. Same for my glasses. My pots don't weigh much and are expensive to replace so I'll take those. My bed is nearly on it's best before expiry so maybe that is worth replacing but then again that is a bigger expense to replace but moving it costs about 50% of what a new one would cost.

So, any suggestions?

Gee that's true...but can I still stick my tongue out at the Oilers? You just watch.. because I am getting the first snow tires I've had in probably a dozen years, that Roger's Pass will be clear. when I go through. I'll have to take up skiing just to get some use out of the tires then and that could be dangerous.

You know what is kind of funny/ironic is that the things I am more than willing to replace are things like my office bookshelves (already got rid of 2 of them because they are heavy and not very expensive to replace ) until it dawned on me they are from Ikea and work perfectly and kelowna has everything but an Ikea...:hairpull: Now Ikea isn't big on my list of needs given I maybe darken their doors once every couple of years, but for bookshelves they are hard to beat.

So much for debating that... my brother just came over and since I couldn't decide, I decided to not even think about it and gave them all to him. 4 more heavy thing off the move list along with some tool stuff and planters.

Someone else is coming soon to take my old sewing machine and anything else she can use so that will help too. There was supposed to be a second hand store type come look at my antiques (which I also decided can go) yesterday but he didn't show  Guess I'll call some others next week to see if they will take them and that will be some other big things out of the way. If I had time I'd probably clear the place completely and just load my duvet and clothes and computer and be done with it.I just didn't think it cost so much to move especially when you want to store stuff (which essentially adds 50% more to the cost). I'll also call the women's groups to see if they want all the dishes, glasses and other kitchen stuff and hope they pick up to save me some work.

I am also happy to announce pretty much all the snow is now melted but still too soggy and wet to mow the lawn (I tell you I am going to be pushing not to mow that lawn or pick up the leaves if I can do it because I hate that job... I'll leave new owner my mower so she can experience it if the lawn dries out enough (and normally it will in Nov so you can get all the leaves before it's too late)...nice, aren't I?).

I just drove back through the pass from Vernon today and the roads are bare and not even any snow on the sides of the road at the summit. It rained all weekend in the OK but still no snow so that is better than Calgary. Best part about moving to the OK you can now cheer for the Canucks instead of the Flames.:biglol:

We moved 3 times in two years (6 years ago), so yes, we got rid of everything that we hadn't used in a time line of a year. Also, if we didnt love it, it was donated or thrown away. We paid for a container, so shipping being expensive, we had to be strict. Even then, once the container arrived, we had in the mean time bought new stuff, and threw more things away from the container!

We did not take any drapes, rugs of no value, hand-me down furniture that is outdated, or not good quality, kitchen crockery and bowls and 'stuff' that was chipped or outdated, bed linen older than a year, clothes and shoes older than 2 years, artwork that was low quality, bathroom mats and 'stuff'.
So if the couch is not the love of your life, leave it. Tools we did bring with, but only the good ones, the rusted stuff we threw away. We left the tv, vhs, dvd player too-all outdated. We did bring our music system. And if you can leave the appliances, leave them! There's always something better and newer on the market.

Basic rule, if you don't love it, leave it!
Another rule we used this time around was 'if I didn't want to face unpacking it later after the move, it was thrown away.' No joy in unpacking, and definitely no joy in unpacking things you have no where to go and don't really want'

"It's all in the eye of the beholder" Friends of ours, left early for Florida and are complaining about how cool it is there (74 F). We are laughing as we state they should be here in Ontario where we have seen snow flakes but no heavy snow like Calgary. 74 is ideal for me!!!!!!!!

Yes, I've been following the weather and making myself crazy seeing how much warmer I could be right now. I'm also watching the mtn passes but am getting winter tires on Monday so I can drive that without as much worry about seeing the bottom of a cliff or being stuck not able to get up a hill. As far as I can tell it's supposed to be raining the weekend I move there so I guess I'll get introduced to it pretty quickly. Rain this time of year... totally strange to me.

DBD - if it makes you look forward to your move - it is pouring rain tonight and the temperature is +10. Rainy and warm, so warm.

Never fear, there will be snow in the winter. It just won't be anything like I've seen in the weather pictures of Calgary.

Since pictures are worth a 1000 words, here is the reason I am moving. Note the time of year they were taken is on the pictures

My goodness! You've been on quite the adventure. I just read all about your trip to the West Coast. You've visited so many great spots ... I can imagine how difficult it is to make such a big decision.

I missed out on what got this moving saga going. I'm just glad it's not me ... and we only moved 15 minutes away from our last place! :)Two years of lingering anxiety over the zillions of details that went into that decision to move to a larger condo.

You are getting lots of great advice from the gals on this forum.

I wish you all the best ... wherever you decide to unpack and settle in.

yes there sure are oodles of things like paint supplies around here. One of my neighbours is coming over when the temp goes up a bit to see what she wants as I've decided that except for some key tools there is no point in moving things like flower pots, bird bath, some garden tools, etc. Then there are things like my garden hose that I love to pieces since it's the only one I've ever had that doesn't kink and so it'll come. I may limit it to what fits in one of my garbage cans goes.

The buyer has been in a condo and told my Realtor she'd be interested in the garden tools and such so maybe with some of the other things she wants we can strike a deal that leaves her all the paint and gardening supplies as well as an antique I have here she wants and gives me a couple of bucks to keep myself in hot chocolate for a week or two.

It's kind of funny to me that after clearing last spring how even the things I thought I still wanted aren't quite so appealing when considering what they will cost to move. Sentiment gone right out the window (well except for the Barbies... I'm still not prepared to part with them for some reason even though I haven't even opened the cases for about 30 years). I wish I could justify getting rid of that orange sofa I've never really liked though.

hmmmm off to check the local classifieds and see if it would get enough to justify selling it. That would be one heavy item gone if I could make a decent $ on it.

Another thought if all the papers are signed on your part you shouldn't need to be there on closing day the lawyer will deposit the money. We left the day before closing and just checked our account to make sure the money was in and kept on driving.

I didn't move anything I didn't love. Dishes are heavy as you said so this is a great time to get new when you arrive. Books are very heavy and unless they are very important to you leave them behind. I went through all my linen and got rid of any that were worn at all. Furniture I checked it over carefully and left some behind I even contacted the buyer and asked if they wanted to buy any of ours they took the TV and all the components and that saved us as we were full and would never had room for it. If it is a young couple they may not have a lot of things and be happy to buy some of your stuff worth a call. We left things like garabge cans behind they took up to much room and DH packed our paint tools which should have been tossed most were to old to use after being in storage for a year. Remember to remove ink from your printer I didn't and I have a great printer that is useless now the ink dried. Even if it seems small the weigh adds up so things like door mats aren't worth the time.
