Mags and Shows

What is currently your favourite tv decorating and design show, and what is your favourite decorating and design magazine?

I don't get to watch a lot of the shows on tv anymore, as I work far too much, but I think that I'm still pretty addicted to Design Inc., and for mags I love Style At Home, Florida Design Magazine, and Traditional Home. I've not been a fan of H&H mag since it seems to have moved toward the higher end homes, and more modern furnishings. Occasionally, I'll have a peek in one and if it looks appealing, I'll pick it up, but I subscribe to SaH, and Traditional Home.

You??

I just bought it but found it to lack anything to read. Sorry just not much in this months issue. To bad was looking for something to read tonight.

Janet, Divine Design is on Sunday evenings, at 8;30 pm. (Atlantic time, not sure what time it's on in your area).

I subscribe to H&H and Style at Home. I'm ready to give up on my H&H subscription though. It's just so high end and geared to large homes that I can't even relate to it anymore. And if I see one more "hotel style" room I think I will scream. Doesn't anyone come up with any original designs anymore? Seems everything looks the same. As for tv I haven't been able to catch H&H because of the awkward timeslot. HGTV is sinking deep into a hole if you ask me. I agree with the other posters... just WaYYYyyyy to much goofy drama. Not even true to life drama (that I could take) but fake drama. I do still enjoy Cityline, Real Renos and Facelift occasionally.

Is it still on? I did used to like it aside from the fact that it was totally flakey too. But I love her design work.

I found the trend issue of H&H pathetic. They forecast every known decorating trend for the coming year - I guess then you have to be right in your predictions. The S@H issue was much better.
I really enjoyed the "How Not To Decorate" show - entertaining and the rooms were like many I see. I also enjoy Design Inc, Design Match and Restaurant Makeover.

I was frankly irritated with this month's H&H magazine. The one condo was featured on the show MONTHS ago. Are they trying to suggest you only need to watch tv OR read the magazine, not both???

Wo they really seem to be losing viewers and readers if this forum is any indication what is happening I hope they are paying attention.

I caught Trading Spaces last night, the first time in a very long time. I like the new format -- no Paige, each designer has their own carpenter and they go back two weeks later to see what the homeowners have done to their rooms. Hildi was on last night and her room was quite the wacky nightmare it usually is.

I've pretty well quit watching HGTV -- what is the deal with Craft Corner Deathmatch? Does anyone find that entertaining? I would like to see design shows with more DIY. I like Design Match when I can find it, I also like Restaurant Makeover.

As for magazines, once my subscription to H&H has finished I will not be renewing it. Every month we see the same houses and condos - boring! I've just subscribed to Syle at Home, I thought I'd give it a try.

(not as handy as Handy Andy though) but I really can't sit through his new show. At least on Home to Go he had other people that were more interesting to listen to than he his but now with this new show... a total snorefest as my son would say. I don't evne like the rooms that they are doing that much.

Saw that How not to decorate show - I love when the two guys fight with each other... that is so funny! The rooms are pretty ugly that is for sure. I have a friend's mom that should be reported to that show. Her living room is a Dusty Rose nightmare!

i dont know if you watch "home to go" or "home to stay" and even on "this small space....he has worked wonders for a long time with pre built shelveing units...like the ones you would see from Ikea.....when he was done you wouldnt even know they were stock shelving, i have watched him do this for a long time with excellent ideas to share....

I don't watch HGTV during the week at all, I just have it on for most of the day on the weekends when I am doing housework, etc. I ensure I vacum when the game show type shows are on. I will actually sit down and watch Redesign, Home to Stay, Selling Houses, Buy Me, Design Match if it isn't a re-run.
I have been waiting for this weeks episode about the Ikea cabinets, it's amazing how different they look with traditional knobs and some mouldings.
I missed Small Space, Big Style, that's one of the newer ones.
I did see How Not To Decorate, it's on again at 1PM e.s.t. today. I liked it ok, I think an hour is a bit long and it could be a much better show if the designer didn't have a meltdown over every little thing. I don't find it interesting or entertaining to watch a grown man have a tantrum. It was interesting to see the homeowners on that show though, how they used to be so in style and they just got stuck in a certain era. I guess some people stop paying attention to what is in style when they are going about their busy lives. I have to admit I really liked her fancy drapes though AND her original bedroom.

I caught the end of the show - I think they are from Ikea, I seem to remember hearing that on the forum a while back. I loved the way they looked! I have an extra bedroom that has really ugly storage right now that I think would look great done with that idea! I'll have to tuck the idea away until I get around to tackling that room!

I had taped it and it was a crack up. The florida woman just didn't have a clue and seemed to think everyone outside of Florida would need education, hence she brought her books to read to people. Unfortunately they were all books for preschoolers which she still insisted on reading to the dad and teens while they politely sat and then tried to escape.

What killed me was when the chicken died the daughter kept saying "it's dead" but mom wouldn't listen. then when she did realize it was hopeless she announces they should bury it and one kid commented on how it was probably meant to be supper.

I have to think that woman is going to be very upset and surprised at how she comes across when she sees the show and whatever comments pop up on the Internet. She seems so unbelievably dense it is comical.

last night. Trading Spouses. Nothig really to do with decorating other than the vain, egotistical, conceited wife from Florida decided the style in the Wisconsin woman's farm home was inadequate and later she was moving the furniture around. I don't think there was anything great about the style in the Florida home. I just had to mention this show because I was laughing so hard at the arrogance & stupidity of the Florida woman. Paraphrasing "people in Florida all care what they look like and if the whole country and the rest of world did this, then the whole world would be a better place." Gag & choke. When the chicken from the henhouse died she insisted on putting in on the cool garage floor with a fan going. She was taking its pulse because she was sure it was heat stroke & chickens just are not used to heat like she is, being from Florida. I swear I could have peed my pants on that one. I know they heavily edit these reality shows but this woman was priceless. This must be one of the better episodes because it's a two parter. It won't be a regular show for me but now I have to watch it next week.

is on on Saturday afternoons as well - they run a recap of all the great design shows Saturday afternoons which is when I have them all set up to tape.

I did manage to catch it last night though and I am absolutely smitten with those wardrobes/built ins - were they from Ikea, they never mentioned but I saw them putting them together so I was assuming so. The carpenter didn't build them did he? If they are Ikea there is a chance I could do those myself!!! If a carpenter is required I am out of luck!!!

I love Design Match. I can catch it tonight at 8:30. I predict Meredith wins this one. :D

I've not been watching a lot of tv either, and haven't even seen the new H&H. I do like Design match, and for those interested, it is on Fridays at noon, 8:30 and 11:30, EST on HGTV.

DBD...it sounds like i missed some laughs....lol on the most part i dont like the drama in shows, but the british can just have a way of making you laugh and i cant believe they changed things and they actually showed it, as you always wonder what happens after the designers are done and gone...maybe i will catch it next week

DBD - okay, yes, now I know which ones they are. The Block is the Aussie show (I think I've seen about 5 minutes of one of the episodes). Design Match is the one with Red Heron, and I think I saw one episode - the one where they did the living room with the fireplace, but the other show I've definitely never seen, nor heard of. I went through the listings last night, and someof them flagged memories, but some did not. I haven't sat down in front of HGTV in months. And I never watch TLC anymore. I do make an effort to watch Design Inc when it comes on, if I'm home but I don't intentionally look for it. I just like SR. I think she's enormously talented. And I do love Candace Olsen. I think she's the best on tv. I've seen her do everything from traditional to mod, and she seems to kick butt everytime!

I don't get a chance to watch HGTV much anymore but I do like Home to Stay and Design Inc. Haven't watched H&H all season.

As for magazines: I enjoy Style at Home and Canadian Home and Country. H&H not so much because it's not as down to earth as the other two.

Love the website though!

The Block and Great Taste No Money are on Prime. Design Match is on HGTV. If you go to zap2it.com you can feed in your postal code and channel options and then do a search by either a show name or network and find the listings for day, time, episode of any show you like. It's a good way to find shows when you aren't sure when they are are etc.

Here's your recap. They did finish the house with, of course, the usual time pressures, late furniture arrivals, etc.

They did a couple of things that cracked me up on that show. The guy that was doing the voice over pretty much held the show together for me with his 'typical guy' attitude as he really didn't understand why they were doing some things and then in the end had to admit the designers were right. He also pointed out all the silliness as he saw it which I thought was refreshing.

Then it was when they showed Colin (I think it was Colin) phoning the project manager (who had moved on to another house) because something in the bathroom hadn't been done right. PM is tired of listening to the designer so he just puts the phone down and lets him talk while he proceeds to take some cupboards apart and then picks up the phone just in time to say 'bye'.

In the end the house looked a lot better but they showed what the homeowners did after they left and what the designers thought of it. Some things (like putting up net curtains) the woman said she did pretty much to spite the designers as she thought they were wrong about some things.

Meanwhile the couple were happy with what had been done to their house for the most part...well except for the front of the house which they changed, the kitchen counter which they changed, the curtains in a few rooms which they changed, the bathroom tile and towel colours which they changed, and the armoir for her nick nacks which she promptly emptied and spread around her livingroom again..

I haven't even heard of half these new shows..... The Block? Design Match? Great Taste No Money? Are these all on the HGTV channel? I must go look at the cable listings. I haven't seen a single episode of H&H since the time slot changed. I'm just not home to see it. They must be losing viewers if this thread is any indication!

I'm so out of the loop!!! :-)

but it wouldnt surprise me that its the producers of these tv shows that are making some great designers look bad....then again if they are getting paid to look bad, maybe its worth it for them....personally for me, money wouldnt be everything. There are only a couple that i really like as i mentioned already...i missed the 9 oclock "how not to decorate" and started to watch the same one on at around midnight....but i fell asleep, do they finish the house in one episode and is the show 1 hour long....i have never watched the block either, so im not familier with that one either

I saw so many titles posted here that I had never seen before. Must be time for the mid-winter shake up. If I recall correctly last year's shake up brought us that scary Love It or Lose It fiasco. Did they really get enough of an audience to renew it???

I wonder if this means that they will have new Scarier Designers... I can't even imagine worse - maybe Pre-School Designer...oh how awful.
