making drapes

A month or so ago, I wrote for some advice regarding drapes.  Well I have finished one set using back tabs and I think they look great.  Now I am onto the next set.  For this set I want to try using the pleater tape.  I found some tape that makes smaller pleats.  I sewed the tape on top and bottom, leaving 1 inch of material at the top of the drape.  When I pulled in the strings, the pleats looked messy and I didn't like them at all.  Is there something I should know?  Am I sewing the tape on the wrong way?  Is it the wrong tape?  I might have to give up and just use the back tabs.  I really like the idea of ribbon for the tabs.  It worked well - less weight than using material and much faster.
