Maple tree

We just cut down a large overgrown, and very ugly tree in our front yard. It was 30 feet tall, and I think it was some kind of Juniper. We noticed after we cut it down that we had a maple tree growing beside it. It's about 2-3 feet high now, and growing rapidly. Because we're in an area where we have lots of maples in our backyard, we decided we would like to encourage the Maple. Will the underground roots from the tree we chopped interfere with our maple? Will it continue to grow, regardless? Should we consider moving it??

Forget about answering this question - during our recent Hurricane Juan, our small maple, among many others in our yard were ripped out of the ground and sent flying across the street - we don't have to worry about landscaping this fall. :-(
