Melamine paint???

janetc's picture
janetc

these are the stores i have to choose from
HomeHardware
Canadian Tire
HomeDepot
Color your world
Which have you used and liked the best...i think we are just going with white....can you get Melamine in different finishes...our last one seemed rather flat....it is for our kitchen cabinets

Wall color....what color do you think would tie in nicely with gold, i dont want the cream that you see in the bottom of the eating area, i feel it wont do enough for the kitchen.....we have a green in our kitchen now but its more of a cool green rather than warm like the gold in the eating area and living room area....i was thinking of the color that trynto used...BM baby turtle, it seems to be a warmer green....we would like color because the kitchen is small and its mostly white cupboards and appliances...as you can see the kitchen is gallery and is in the middle of the the three rooms...excuse the messy cork board, that will be gone too ;)
thank you

Well if you are going to look at SICO try 6197-53 Safari Jacket, 6196-53 Grilled Artichoke, 6141-53 Lemon Thyme, 6144-53 Sempervivum and 6144-63 Park Cactus. I just picked up SICO's colour trend booklets and green was one of them. They look really nice........

thank you for the other color choices.....if there are any other sico ones....can you post them.....i can get Sico right here in town......where as homedepot and BM i will have to travel out of town and not sure we will be doing that.....so im open to any other Sico colors....including purples and plums....i have written down all the colors suggested here...thank you all!

Well, if you HAVE to go with green ;), what about BM HC-115 Georgian Green?? Or Sico 6141-42 Greyish Sage or 6141-31 Marjoram.

yes BM Baby Turtle is an old color, i just lucked in that he was able to find me an old paint chip.....i think if i remember correctly tryntodecorate said it is almost identical to the Old Salem Gray that Kburgo painted in her bedroom. I did mention the purples and reds to dh but he just wasnt buying it, firstly he thinks im one that needs a color that is vesatile because i like to change out accessorie colors :D and secondly he feels that it may be a better look with the greens if we do decide to sell. So im likely going to lean towards one of the greens, i just need to get to the BM store and see which one is best in the room. thank you Lasalle.....however, i do still have plans for the purple.... :D Tryntodecorate has used BM baby turtle, perhaps she can post a picture of the rooms she used it in.....pleasssssssssseeeeeeeee! ;)

Just another thought, Mary Dobson did her kitchen makeover on Cityline last week and chose BM Smoky Green but found this colour to fresh for her. She changed it to CC690 Piedmont Gray and loves it. I thought it had more blue than green in it when I look at the paint chip but she sees green in it.

I thought with the blue in your counters this might work.........

I guess I'm a minority. I'm still in favour with my original suggestion of BM Baffin Island and Old Salem Gray. I do not know Baby Turtle is this colour discontinued? Its not on thierwebsite?

Lets us know what you decide, I'm curious on which melamine paint you end up with.

:) thank you, i know it would normally be frowned upon, but i can see dh's point...the floor is still in really good shape and we dont need the added expense right now. Its funny you should mention that about the iron, that is how we removed the old ones from years ago....however, dh has a heat gun now....and you are right the heat takes them right up no problem.

I wouldn't worry about having the three floors at all.

BTW if hubby is pulling up sticky tiles hand him the iron. That stuff comes up like butter when it's heated and you can put an old towel between the tile and iron to keep the iron from getting gooey.

janetc's picture
janetc

now this is something that bothers me, but do you think it would be that awful...
i know your flooring should flow....ecspecially in a small space....so this is the sort of problem...........we cant buy the slatey looking peel and stick tiles that are in the hall now...which run from the front entrance and all the way down the hallway to the bedrooms and they are in really good shape so dh is no way going to replace them..............so do you think its going to look real bad with another slate look in the kitchen. Ideally if we had it in the budget i would replace all and have the same in the kitchen as the hallway but i just cant do that now............

the first picture shows the three floors we have now together
the second picture shows how the slate ones travel down the hallway

you guys have been as busy as beavers..............thank you so much for the mock ups.

The makeover is a mini tight budget makeover.....paint cabinets, paint walls, replace handles on cabinets, and put down new peel and stick tiles that look like slate and something inexpensive on the backsplash..........yes dbd, dh has removed a small section of the old peel and stick tiles, cant complain, we bought them about 10 years ago and they have stood up well and they werent expensive but i think they are dated and now looking a little rough.

i love all the color suggestions............if i decide on a hit of color i certainly would love to do a purple or plum.....if i decide on more of a safe or neutral color i really like bm baby turtle and i also love the color kburgo posted done in her bedroom......thank you....
I will get out and pick up some paint chips...i think he is starting the cabinets this weekend or possibley friday night.....so i must get busy. :D BTW this is the counter top which will be staying....it is perhaps a little darker in real life and can sometimes show a flick of blue and the counters will be staying, just not in the budget right now.

Old Salem Grey would be my vote....with the white would look very crisp and clean. :)

Yes that is the colour I was thinking of deep purple.

dustbunnydiva's picture
dustbunnydiva

Yeah, deep purple. go for broke because there isn't a lot of wall space anyway. If you get one with a bit of a wine tone to it that would be very neat in a kitchen.

Some of the squillion purple chips I have here that might work:
- Berry tart 20F2-06
- Royal Iris 43RB 07/249
- Inkberry 73RB 08/259
Those chips were all from HD, and are CIL chips.

janet your kitchen doesn't have much wall space so you could really go dramatic I like the idea of a deep purple (eggplant) I think it would look awesome with you DR LR colour.

And if your dining room is lighter gold....

smoodgie's picture
smoodgie

OK, here are some mock-ups -- BM Raspberry Truffle, two purples, and OId Salem Gray. I'm not sure which gold from your dining room is more accurate, so I've got two versions of each for you -- one with a lighter gold and one with a darker gold. I added a gray "tile" floor.

BTW, Raspberry Truffle covers in 2 coats, even without primer :)

Oooh, janet, you could be our Purple Granite guinea pig!!!! :D I'm feeling the need for some mock-ups.... :)

I think HC94 Old Salem Gray is a beautiful green...however, I'm a little partial, I just painted my bedroom that colour. I have white crown moulding and I love the two together. It would be a nice crisp look in your kitchen with the white cupboards, but it's still a nice warm colour that would look awesome with the gold in your dining room...

Janet, can you post a close pic of your backsplash tiles and your countertop. You should pick a colour from those.

Lasalle's picture

Another colour option is HC94 Old Salem Gray it has more depth to it and would work well with the gold also. Can you buy the BM melamine product anywhere? They can tint to any white colour you want, Cloud White, White Down and HC 27 Monterey White are great white colours for cabinets.

this one's not green either...but i love the colour reno-vator used in her kitchen....plum something  ...sorry forgot the name...but it's a really bright and cheery colour..perfect for the kitchen.

Yes, a really deep purple with your white cabinets. Nice work on DR.

dustbunnydiva's picture
dustbunnydiva

Or...a really deep dark purple! Purple and gold are naturals together.

So what is happening with the floor? You said your hubby was pulling it up but I didn't catch what he is putting in.

im open to different colors, and would love red but not sure dh would want to paint the 3 or 4 coats it may take ;) i will also check out the other color you posted. Thank you for your comments on the new light, good price at costco...with budget restrictions we will once again use the peel and stick tiles that have a slate look, these tiles have lasted about 10 years and they were just cheapies.

You know what colour would look great in your kitchen?? RED!!!! With the white cabinets, silver/brushed metal hardware, a dark gray slate-look floor and the gold in your DR and LR... :)

But, if you insist on green ;), how about BM October Mist??

Nice new chandelier above your DR table :)

which one is shinier out of the two, i was hoping for a tad bit of shine, this last melamine we used seems so flat
