My partner and I stripped the varnish from our "honey oak" mantle two years ago, and restained the mantle a deep walnut. Unfortunately, we did a crappy job. I have never been satisfied - the stain is too uneven and there are spots where it never sunk in very well.

Now, I am thinking of painting the mantle. The walls will be off white, with one "chocolate" wall. The carpet is (regrettably) a medium light grey berber. The tile surround on the fireplace and the hearth are medium grey tiles. My upholstery is black and browns, my end and accent tables are metal and my large coffee table is stained "espresso". I have a black painted armoire.

Question - should I paint the mantle dark brown, espresso or black? How glossy?

I think I need to start today - so HELP!
