make sure and treat the ground with a fungicide before you plant new trees in the future. Fungi can live for years in dorment stages. Also be on the lookout for discolorations on other plants in your yard. That is a bad fungi... -David

Yes Artsy...the sad reality...:( I have been scouring the web & have found the same bad news...( great link once again! from hipfunkyfun) all the symptons are those of this disease...On the upside the tree is almost 20 years old & this is considered a long life for a Mimosa. Another downside is that we transferred 2 to my yard. The fungas responsible for the disease is transferred via the earth & travels through the roots. SO mine will be sure to have it also:( Shame, such beautiful trees when in bloom. We also learned that we must burn any & all fo the tree that is removed so that the cycle doesn't continue by it rotting into the earth. Geez, who knew???:( Thanks to both of you for your help!

Hi dy'n, although I am not that familiar with Mimosa trees because of where I live, I did some checking and this is what I found out. From the picture, it appears that the brown discoloration on the bark may be a symptom of "vascular wilt" which is very similar to dutch elm disease. This is not good news I'm afraid. :(

Mimosas are fast growing trees and can sometimes "split" where branching occurs (from the weight of the top canopy). At first glance I thought that maybe this could be the problem but the brown discoloration around this wound suggests that it might be diseased.

I would suggest that your mom contact an arborist or get advice from a reputable greenhouse or tree farm for an accurate diagnosis. Here is a link on vascular wilt: http://www.fl-dof.com/Pubs/Insects_and_Diseases/td_hrd_mimosa_wilt.htm

Please let me know dy'n how she makes out. I will cross my fingers that it is just split bark and not vascular wilt! Good luck.
