Mirror, mirror on the wall!

itsjustme's picture

We have a few finishing touches still to do in the bathroom. One of the things I am stumped on is the mirror.

Do I get a mirror with a gilded frame or frameless (just clips)?
If I get framed, should it be a burnt brushed gold or silverish to go with the silver taps and cupboard knobs. I don't like gilt gold fixtures.

I need to get this asap, I am tired of trying to see my reflection in the window!

How about an oblong or rectangular mirror, centred over the sink but placed with the longest side horizontal to the counter. Then you put a vase, or even a standing hand towl rack to the right of the sink. I think that an oval shape would help detract from the the angle of your wall, better than a rectangle, which may draw attention to it.

that is what she is suggesting.
I am afraid that will be more money than a ROUND ONE (subliminal message - get a round one - as big as the space will allow.).

I had a wall to wall and ceiling to top of vanity in a second bathroom and found that the edges of the mirror 'rusted'...it was glued to the wall but lack of air circulation eventually wrecked the mirror.

Are you suggesting getting a mirror made to fill the entire triangle space?

Have you thought about going to a glass store and getting a mirror fitted perfectly to the shape of the wall? It would make the room look bigger and you wouldn't have to worry about the style getting dated.

you have kind-of brown tones, and it will work well if you put dark wicker baskets on the shelf, and maybe some blue stones in a flat wicker bowl - more like a plate maybe ?? - with some soaps, even....

and if the price is good . so much the better ! You can always paint it or take it out the frame and re-frame it later, or move it to the spare room next time you do the bathroom . :D

how much it cost? :O

Sorry to hear about your back. At least you are getting some rest today. Although I wonder how comfortable a computer chair can be. :)

I looove the one you found at Restoration Hardware. That is more my style.
But $400!!!!! I don't think so!

as I said, I have a reeeeally bad back today, so I've been web browsing.

How about this?

it's from www.puredesignonline.com

There are others that are similiar--NO BUT WAIT--what is it--too 1963? ;)

a round one with a wood frame, convex: so you'll have that fish eye effect which may be a bit disconcerting first thing in the morning.

you really like that wicker mirror--why not use it/get it?

It seems like a stylistically good choice given the natural materials you want to use for your accents.

A frameless oval will look quite bare and a touch too modern for what you want, I think. The next bet is to go with a nice dark wood: but that gets pricey.

Anyway, I just wanted to encourage you to go for what YOU like. If you aren't really that fond of it, forget I said the above, lol!

I don't know if I can describe what I want the overall look to be. It is a VAST improvement already to what it used to be with bright blue walls, cracked tiles and gross toilet!

The walls are painted in BM OC-2, Pale Almond (the ceiling too). The floors are laminate cherrywood.

I think I want it to look sophisticated, but not flashy. Clean and calm. Uncluttered. Some pretty coloured stones in a container somewhere (!), white towels, I have a thick white mat already there, Nickel and white towel rails and paper holder.
I need some kind of picture on the wall, that won't get ruined by water vapour.
Some wicker baskets in the shelves on the right (just have to FIND the right size)

At first I wanted a framed mirror. I saw a square silverish one the other day for a reasonable price. But now I think I have to hunt for a frameless circle one. I don't want the fancy swivel ones, way too expensive, and it won't get used. I don't want one of those zig-zaggy jobs either. lol

Is a framed silver one also not right for this space? If it took up the most of the wall, not centered above the basin, but centered on the wall. The max. size is 26" high.

the way you or I wearing leg warmers would be considered dated!

Though for those of you who have been resisting my love of teal... Marty Millionaire's building in Toronto at Queen and Parliament is being repainted Bridesmaid Dress Teal as we speak... I laughed out loud when I saw it and will take a picture of it when they are done with the scaffolding!

ILC... I HAVE put mascara on in a bullseye mirror and have both eyes still safely in their sockets! You challenged a girl who can line her lips and apply lipstick without use of a mirror in a moving car! HA HA!

As for mirror type - what is the overall feeling you want for the bathroom?

Are you saying you don't like the Ikea wicker mirror?
Does it look too dated?

Should I rather go for the frameless mirror?

my first thought was to go frameless and make a template of the wall space and bring it to a glass shop where they can make one custome for you. i think it should fill that angled wall.
as for the baskets wicker would keep it looking warm which is always nice but the wire baskets would look good too! so i say either one...:D-

try putting on mascara in a bulls eye mirror! C'mon, I dare ya! ;)

round mirror at a glass store! They had lots and lots of mirrors there. Try one on approval! I love mine.

round mirrors out there... but you have to go to the more interesting accessory design stores - ones who don't just cater to the modern flavour of the week.

Bullseye type mirrors are all the rage. There are also many stores that carry catalogues of mirror suppliers that have wonderful, well-priced round mirrors.

Oh and that wicker one.... talk about a flashback to 1983!

There is no light fixture as yet there, just a bulb! On the left wall next to the mirror space. Also need light fixture for ceiling. Still looking for something...
And a pic or 2 for the wall...
And blinds for the window...
And something to put some pretty stones in for the countertop... :D

for round or oval shape

if you can't locate something frameless in a retail store (if that's the look you decide upon), you can also look up "glass and mirror" suppliers in your area, if they don't have a ready-made one they can usually cut any shape you need and finish the edge as you want (small bevel, large bevel etc...) plus supply any anchors/brackets required

also, just curious as the pic doesn't show it, what kind of lighting do you have in that part of the room? if there's nothing there, maybe something to consider (and compensate for the size and placement of said fixtures) at this point?

Have you got anything else we can help you with?

Maybe if there was more than one (or two or three!!) things to shop for, dh wouldn't mind? ;)

if there is much difference in height between you and DH, or if you have children. There is about 1' difference between me and dh. Our mirror is 40" x 28" with the frame. We had to compromise on hanging it. I would like it lower and he would like it higher. He says it cuts off his head when he looks in it.

Now I am looking at something that is hard to find! Round mirrors...
Is Ikea the only place?

Who's the fairest of them all?

I never thought about round. It looks really nice. I am so gald I didn't just go out and get a rectangle one.

I like the wicker one, and it is 60cm diameter, so fits the same as in the pic. I just don't think Dh wants to schlepp all the way back to Ikea again, we were there last week! I should have posted this then.
Maybe I will have to live without a mirror until he gets excited enough to take me back there again! I can't see myself driving there on my own, I will probably get lost, take the wrong turn...end up who knows where :D

I wonder what a round frameless one would look like... does HD have them?

took to long to type that last one, it's already been brought up

about a round or oval mirror? It might go better with the anlge instead of emphasizing it (to me it looks like the corner of the rectangular mirror is pointing at the angle)

As for baskets, wicker with a traditional styrl frame (maybe a white painted wicker?) and wire baskets with a moderrn style frame. You could go either way with the frameless.

IF the round one takes up all that space then that is definitely the way to go!--in my humble opinion! ;)

You've had lots of good ideas here. My first thought was that I would probably just fill the largest area I could with a frameless rectangle mirror which would be centred directly on the wall behind the sink. I don't think you need to worry about the angle, really. I think you could do something interesting there- but I need to think about it a little more. :) Don't wait up tho' :D
