Morning Glorys

Sweetpea, you mentioned in a post that morning glorys are hard to take down in the fall. We are thinking of them for our fence in the backyard. Do they need a lot of sun? What do you mean by hard to take down? We are trying to get away from a lot of garden work as we are older now  TIA.

My gosh never knew that about them either dbd.So definetly it will be clematis or some kind of climbing vines. wouldn't want the grandchildren getting high,
they are active enough. Thanks for the info.

I think morning glories might appear more like a perennial because they are so good at reseeding themselves. I was just reading that some places consider it illegal to sell the seeds because they can be an hallucinogen (you have to eat a lot of them) and apparently the seeds can be toxic to pregnant women and people with heart conditions. That was news to me.

My Mom had Virginia creeper on her garage and it looked so nice even inthe winter when it was bare and gave the birds such a nice place to hide. I loved it good choice for hiding not he nicest wall.

I planted a virginia creeper to cover the old metal storage shed & it does a great job ,it evens grows onto the ugly roof of the shed...nice big leaves and I like how the suction pads cling without a trellis :)

so that's why my morning glories didn't come back this year!! ...LOL...I thought they were a perennial!!....my virginia creepers came back and are doing well...they have a nice red color in the fall....I used them up against my garage wall which is beside my pool and it covered it nicely and quickly.

Flowerpot...I planted alot of morning glory seeds as I had them the full length of the fence ...they were in full sun and grew profusely.......When I had to pull them down the tacks and string would be difficult to pull out & I would fill plenty of bags ,...I guess i'm getting to old for the hassle...I have had honeysuckles & clematis's the past couple of yrs and highly recommend these vines as they are maintenance free...I will post some pics tomorrow although they are not in bloom yet.... :) ...When making the trellis for climbing I used wire and little screw hooks for them to climb and it has held up very well :) I do miss the morning glories ..they are so pretty. :)

I don't see why they should be hard to pull down. They are annuals, just rip them up and toss in a bag, lol
I have planted a packet of seeds, and they are just coming up. Apparently you need to plant a lot to cover a fence. I am also trying the climbing black-eyed susans and scarlet runner beans along my fence this spring.
If you want more permanent coverage, consider a perennial vine like honeysuckle or a clematis. I have both and added a silver lace vine. Hope they all grow like I imagine.
