Hi All, I am new to this site and we need to Mount our 42" inch TV over our fireplace. We are not sure how and where to start. Does anyone have a step by step guide or a website that can help. Pictures are also a great help. We don't want to hire a professional, as we don't really have a theater system and all we have is the TV and the cable box. How do we hide the wires???
Your input on this are much greatly appreciated.

There are quite a few web sites out there that contain some good advice.
Basic things to consider:
1. Get a quality mount that is rated for the size, weight and mounting connetction style of your TV. (Most newer TVs use a standard "VESA" mounting model, just make sure that you get a mount that uses the same VESA size as your TV.)
2. Consider whether you will need an articulating or pivoting mount. Do you want to be able to move the TV around?
3. Get a good quality stud-finder and find the studs in the location that you want the TV to go. You MUST mount the TV into a stud or similar supporting structure.
It's a good idea to locate the stud locations well before you tackle the whole project. Sometimes, the exact position you want the TV to hang may not have a stud in just the right location
If you're handy, you can mount a cross-beam between the studs & use that to attach the mount.
As for hiding the wires, if it's a short distance to your cable hook up & power outlet, hiding them is simple. If not, you may consider going through the ceiling or floor (if there is an attic or basement that has open access to the stud/beam structure.
