I just finished watching a movie called Swimming Upstream - it's the true life story of Anthony Fingleton, the Australian Swimmer, who endured years of emotional abuse from his father, and went on to become the national champ. It's powerful and emotional. It's an Aussie film, that's won 5 AFIs (Australian Film Industry awards) And the young man who plays fingleton (Jesse Spencer) is pretty cute, too :-)
Anyone watch any really good movies lately?

Ick is right, don't see unless you want nightmares!
p.s. thanks for the kind word, still working on it but feeling much better:)
2blues, Obella is right on the mark. It is a must see, but be prepared to shed tears. Definately not overly dramatic. Not hollywoodish, if thats what you mean. The story makes a powerful statement, souping it up would have been shameful.
Not Indigo......
Hotel Rwanda is a true story....and a very good one.
It is sad and disturbing, but it's also a tribute to a wonderful man, who deserved recognition for what he did.
final "blah blah" and then I'm off to bed.....just have to ask Indigo.....I've been wanting to see Hotal Rowanda.....is it overly dramatic? or is it realistic? they portray it as a realistic film...but we probably only rent 2or3 movies per month and I really hate wasting a rental on a dud. your info would be appreciated!
Thanks!!
just saw "the march of the penguins" what a fantastic movie..JanetC you said in a previous post that you like 'sappy' movies.....this is the movie for you....Morgan Freeman is the narrator....but I swear that even if you had the sound off you would feel this movie. fantastic....will be buying this one for our collection! FYI another movie like "stand and deliver" with Edward James Olmos is "Lean on Me" with Morgan Freeman...great movies.....
good lord it's now almost 3AM and still wide awake! off to the next post!!
Also recently saw The Exorcism of Emily Rose. That was disturbing and I wish that I had never seen it.
Even the commercials for that movie bothered me! Ick

I'm looking forward to seeing Brokeback Mountain, I've heard its a good film from several people now. I'm going to wait for it to come out on dvd though. I save my big screne theatre pennies for special effect and scenery films like LOTR:)
My hubby recently rented Constant Gardener and Hotel Rwanda.
Constant Gardener was a good watch but very serious and sad. Hotel Rwanda tore me to pieces, a film that is important to view but very difficult to see what these people suffered.
Also recently saw The Exorcism of Emily Rose. That was disturbing and I wish that I had never seen it.
Me and a few friends went to see Brokeback Mountain today.
It was a very well thought out, and written movie. I admire Ang Lee for his courage in bringing this to the big screen (it was surreal the other night during the Golden Globes to see the "pentultimate" in cowboys - Clint Eastwood, present Ang Lee with a Globe award for a Gay cowboy movie. ).
We all enjoyed the movie, and although it's been playing here for over a month, the theatre was still packed. Only 2 or 3 seats.
It's very touching. It's a character developed movie and you really feel like you understand these guys... it's such an emotionally evoking story. I cried a couple of times.
I got teary eyed when the baby penguins died on the ice having froze to death... that was so sad... :-(
What do you mean by the expression " the love scene made you well up"? ;)
I meant that I had tears in my eyes
however, typically if one "wells up" - it means they get teary eyed.
March of the penguins was different sso to speak. It was good to see a movie of a different nature that no one else has done before. What do you mean by the expression " the love scene made you well up"? ;)
but with all the nonsense we have going on around here we could become famous with the next soap...."as the forum turns" lol sorry, when im tired i become silly and out to lunch and i can see just how silly and senseless it is....i guess there just comes a time when you need to just laugh...if my DD doesnt get home soon, im going to fall asleep on my ekeyboard lol

with small kids, I am usually watching some cartoon type movie. Our family watched the documentary March of the Penguins. I thought it was amazing that penguins could evoke the feelings it did for me. There was a "love" scene in it that made me well up.
Here janetc, look at these, you'll be able to see if they're the right ones...

Just saw "Glory Road" - another true account of a Texas Basketball coach willing to take a chance on a few black guys. WOW - it was a terrific movie. Highly reccommend it.
I'm not really into sappy movies, but I did see the Notebook and it was a sweet movie...
Watch it with a box of Kleenex nearby.
Very touching
great performances
i dont watch many movies but when i do its generally comedy or love story types.....i get real sappy....so i have yet to watch the notebook, but i must as i have heard it is a really good movie

2 great movies - both my husband and I agreed on them, which is rare.
The first was "Two for the Money" with Matthew McConaghey (yum!) Al Pacino and Rene Russo. It was a true story about sports gambling. Nothing I would think would be enjoyable, but I loved it.
The second was "Lord of War" with Nicolas Cage. Again, based on real events, he plays an arms dealer.
that sounds good, it's going on my list.
My all time favorite foreign film is
Children of Heaven (Iranian).....touching, beautiful movie...
there are so many......think a lot of people miss out on them
I recently watched His Secret Life (aka Le Fate ignoranti), an Italian film subtitled in English. It's about a woman who has the perfect life and one day her husband is suddenly killed by a car. While she's mourning him she discovers that he had a secret life. The movie shows her journey into his secret life and her her quest to understand it.
I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I finally went to see "Narnia" today and enjoyed it a lot. It was so beautifully done, and it brought back so many memories of when I read the book some years ago. I hope they make another one.
Downloaded memoirs of a geisha, and looking forward to watching that this weekend, if it's anything like the book
