I took cuttings of all my coleus and plant directly in potting soil without dipping in rooting mixture. I kept the soil very damp and placed the plants out of direct light and they are all doing quit well. To keep the plants small and bushy I have beem pinching the tops. I have one still growing outside in a protected spot, its about 3ft tall, I didn't know they could get so big. I will be very sad to see it die down from frost, but at least I have a cutting of it inside for next spring.
I have one inside I just brought in. (2' tall) I put it in a plastic bag and gave the bag a shot of Raid inside. Left it for an hour and brought it inside. The I pinched back all the ends of the stems about 1". I have done this before with no bugs and the pinching makes it grow bushier.
Have fun/
THANKS FOR THE RELPIES.. I WAS HOPING I COULD KEEP THEM AS IS BUT IF THEY ROOT SO QUICK AND EASY I WILL TRY AGAIN I THE SPRING....MY MISTAKE WAS BUYING THEM SO LATE IN THE YEAR FOR ALOT OF MONEY ( THE WERE VERY BIG ) AND NOW NOT GETTING ALOT OF TIME OUT OF THEM. A GOOD LESSON LEARNED. tHANKS AGAIN FOR THE HELP.
I have had luck just rooting some cuttings in water. They root pretty quickly and then just treat them like a house plant. Keep in bright window (no direct sun) until spring.
Just take cuttings, they will root in a glass of water, then pot them up and put in a bright light. If you want to go directly into pots just dip the ends in rooting hormone first. These are one of the easiest plants to do.
We had coleus in previous years but always bought new ones or started some from seeds every year. Maybe you should post the questions in the special garden forum this week.
