My coleus has gone AWOL

smoodgie's picture

I was just outside deadheading the pots on the front porch, and I noticed that there was sort of a little stump in one of the pots. At first, I couldn't figure out what it was. I stood back to look at the pot, and realized that a coleus was missing  Why would somebody or something take a coleus out of my pot?? As far as I can tell, none of the other plants in that planter or any other planter are damaged or missing.

I'm confused!!!!

Ack...no more sand please! When we built our home, our whole yard was one giant sandbox for the 1st summer. It was hell, though having a mudhole might have been worse. We lost half our yard to the wind and it was a constant battle sweeping up sand piles in my house. Good thing we didn't have carpet or it would have been ruined! Anyway, as Smoodgie said, it'd be tough to keep the hoof prints off, as well as the kid and dog prints, LOL. Thanks for the idea though. :)

Good idea!! Only then you'll end up with annoying hoof prints in the sand!! ;)

Smoodgie..as far as I know, the deer don't eat the trees. I planted all spruce and pine (I can't imagine them tasting all that great) but they don't bother the naturally occuring aspen at all...perhaps they do it just to spite me hehe. The stags rub their necks on them to strengthen them so they can be all buffed looking to attract the ladies (hehe, typical male) but also for when they fight the other males. I had also planted some tamaracks but I had only one survive and it was doing great. As you may know, the needles fall off every fall so my brilliant DH thought it had died too and mowed it down! I could have killed him! I don't have bunny problems around here but one year I planted a bunch of irises in front of my house...well my 2 dogs dug them all up and ate them! I think my yard is destined to be ugly forever.

I have a solution ( :p ) - japanese zen garden:

Your discovering the culprit made me chuckle. One time my mom was wondering where her outdoor mat went and just couldn't figure it out. the truth didn't come out until my dad arrived home with a new lawn mower and had to explain what happened to the old one. Now why he would have had that mower going anywhere near the back door which was on a paved patio was something that never got answered. It's like they are 5 year olds afraid to get in trouble sometimes. Just hide the evidence and hope not to be caught.

jetjane, that sucks!!!! Do they eat the trees or damage them by rubbing their antlers on them or both??

The most destruction we have is bunnies or squirrels eating tulip bulbs. Annoying, but nowhere near as bad as having your trees destroyed :(

Now, when we have to be extra-extra careful driving at night not to hit one and when they're eating my plants.... not so much....

Deer are evil!!! Every fall, the stupid stags come and destroy my trees!! We have planted around a 100 trees and they have ruined probably half of them. They always seem to pick the nicest trees too. I had some scotch pines that were doing so well...they had doubled in size in 1 year...and then I found the deer had got to all of them, leaving only a little stubs sticking out of the ground!

Well, I sorta had to suck the admission out of him..... I think he was a bit bashful about getting busted!! But he DID own up to it, so that's good :)

lol smoodgie! It sounded like something my husband would do, that's why I suggested it.

Mirela's right, at least he confessed. hehe

Hei, at least he confessed. But... way to hide the evidence

Oh Mirela, that's too bad!! But better to have destructive deer hanging around the neighourhood than hoodlums, right?!

As it turns out, my sneaky, devious hubby IS the culprit!!! He said a bag he was carrying hit the coleus and broke it. Then he tossed the part that broke off into the flower bed to hide the evidence!!! I can't believe it!!! And here I was, blaming the poor mailman!!

kipper, I think your theory is the most plausible. Probably wasn't my hubby, because he would own up to it. And we don't get the newspaper. So it must've been the mailman!!

Maybe your husband broke it off accidentally and "hid" the evidence in the flower bed. Or the paperboy? Mailman?

Sorry to hear about your plants, Mirela. Deer are so pretty, but they can be destructive!!

To add to the coleus mystery..... when I walked up to the front porch at lunch, I noticed my poor mutilated coleus lying in one of my flower beds. So the thief didn't even eat it!!

I feel your pain  Deers ate half of the plants ( 2 different coleus included) from on one of my planters beside the maind door.

Didn't touch the other one, probably saving it for the next night on the town

I need to talk to my new neighbours and find out more about what not to plant again next year - I've been already warned not to spend any money on tulips and pansies....

Well, an animal eating it seems like the most logical explanation -- only the planter is on the front porch right next tot he front door, and the top of it must be at least a couple of feet off the ground. I suppose an animal could have stood up on its back legs with its front legs on the edge of the planter while it nibbled away.... it's just weird that nothing else in the planter seems to be touched, and there aren't any leaves or other evidence of the coleus being eaten -- just that little stumpy bit left in the dirt.

We do have rabbits in our neighbourhood, and lots of squirrels. Slugs too, but no sign of slime on the stub.

Oh well, on the positive side, frost will porbbaly be hitting soon and wipe out all my annuals anyway!!

a rabbit was hungry. Once I had a pansy plant totally disappear, except fora stub of growth, from pot on the front steps, but we had rabbits around so I figured the rabbit just bit it off and had lunch.

Could it have been pulled out by a squirrel who wanted to bury something? Maybe something ate it?

Big slug? Any slime evidence?
