my living room needs some color

grtpmkn's picture
grtpmkn

ok, here is the deal. the first picture i will show you is my living room before the wife moved out. we had redone it about 2 years ago and were quite happy with it. well, when she left, she took the couch, loveseat, chair, ottoman, end tables, coffee table, curtains, area rug and pillows. the second picture is what it looks like now, with the old furniture from our family room. money at the moment is tight, so what is there has to stay. i would like to add some color back into the room again, particularly an area rug, throw pillows and some curtains. i'm leaning towards burgandy or brick red, but am open to ANY suggestions.

When I googled, it came up with the answer 'the best way to start the weekend'. Very appropiate.

WOW!!!! Talk about a ton of great ideas! Thank you. I think I will try quite a few of those. Never thought about putting curtains down the sides, but not covering any part of the window.

:applaud: Well Scott, a fresh new start can be a great feeling so why stay almost identical to the way it was b4? Switch the couch to the large wall with no window, grab a large mirror with a thick sleek black frame around it the width of the couch (you can get a cheapy if you look) and hang it slightly lower than those boxes (take 'em down & change it up). Position the coffee table infront of the couch. Put the loveseat under the window, bring the chair over a bit to creat an intimate seating arrangement (with the coffee table the other way all seating can reach it (therefore if you have the guys over to watch the game everyone can reach the munchies on the coffee table nomatter where they sit) Get rid of the corner boxes and put that plant there (if it has some height). If you could get some fatter lamps for the end table on either side of the couch that would look alot better too (there's cheap ones out there that look great) sell the old ones in a yard sale lol. extend that drapery rod beyond the size of your window and grab some cheap tab curtains leave open on both sides so they don't close over the window and grap yourself a cheap roll up wood blind (wallmart has them) then you can roll down for privacy and the tab curtains will give the pop of colour u need and the blinds will add some texture to the space. Finish off with a larger scale arearug that all the furniture in the room will be touching once it's laid down. Good luck to you Scott!! EYS

I like the chocolate too. I would try to steer away from the colour scheme you had with your wife. No burgandy for you (just like in Seinfeld "no soup for you"). A new clean slate=a new colour scheme. And the chocolate is moody and sexy, good for setting the mood...

you know, you are right itsjustme. new life, clean slate, out with the old and in with the new. it just hurts a bit because i took alot of pride in that "makeover".

so chocolate is good for setting "the mood", eh? are you suggesting something?

Okay Scott I've started playing not having any idea at all what to choose. This may be a good starting off point to get ideas going. I can change anything after now that the file is together.

I put back the rug just for the exercise but if you have any ideas (and pictures) they can be inserted.

One thing that struck me in both pictures was that the furniture might be better with the loveseat facing the sofa and chair where the loveseat is. That would bring some furniture out from the walls and still should leave you some walking space and TV viewing.

AWESOME DBD!!!! that is so cool seeing it in various shades. i really like the last one especially and i MUST get some kind of area rug back in there. i tried moving the furniture like you said except the couch and loveseat were in opposite locations and it looked a little odd, but that was just me.

Thank you for the pics/suggestions :applaud:

I am sorry...but I have to laugh at the dog comment...I hope you have a good sense of humour Scott.

Do you plan to paint the walls? Are they actually yellow?

You definitely have to get rid of the verticals..and the lace topper thingy. (sorry for my bluntness) And I'm thinking maybe blue? Blue is great with pretty much any shade of brown or taupe. I love the idea of brick red..or burnt orange maybe. Just think it might be nice to take your room in a different direction.

Don't worry, you'll have a comfy living room again in no time. These ladies (and gentlemen) are fabulous.

:) Mel

hahaha...yes, i got one of our three dogs (she took the 2 chihuahuas).

yes, the walls are a harvest yellow. i hate painting, but it may be an option. i really like the chocolate brown / baby blue stuff i've seen in stores lately, so who knows. that or dark blue would look nice, just not with the gold walls (since that is the University of Michigan's colors....lol!).

and thanks Mel ;)

at least she left you the dog...... :D ...sorry I just had too.......as for advice.....obviously the furniture isn't as new as before but I think you have worked it and it looks fine.....an area rug would add color like before......and maybe wood blinds or those bamboo blinds would add some warmth to the room...the white is too stark with all the browns and blacks....good start though....good luck.........

good call on the blinds. i've seen those bamboo ones and they look pretty nice. thanks for the tips.

oh, I wanted to add that judging from the pic, it looks like your couch has a touch of a pink colour to it. That is why I think the chocolate would look good, as it doesn't bring out the pink, like a green or burgandy wall would.
