OK

I wish I knew where my pictures of this are but I saw a solution once that impressed me for this kind of situation. It was basically lattice panels on stilts placed where you need them. So fence type posts as per usual but much taller with the panels (they come in 4 X 8' usually) framed in placed on the top half. That gives you a high visual barrier. Your only limit is how long the posts are.
The ones I saw surrounded a patio and had planters hung at the bottom of the lattice panels so you could plant things that climb or tumble down for a really nice effect. The bottoms were just left open so you could fill those spaces with plants or seating or whatever.
I suppose you could also think of alternatives in the same configuration like adding some canvas panels or whatever between posts too. If they were attached with rods or rope/grommets they would be easy to remove for winter too. Lattice is nice because it provides privacy and shade while still allowing some air flow (so wouldn't take off like a kite in a strong wind).
