Need help- mirror shopping...

Good morning all!

Went mirror shopping last night...now I'm confused. It will go over the fireplace. The fireplace is 50"wX47"h-black w/stainless trim. It is surrounded in black granite, with an ebony floating shelf as a mantle...the space above the mantle 40"h. My questions are:

1. can I do round? With all the straight contemporary lines of the fireplace...(I like tension)
2.Do I stay within the dimensions of the fireplace ie. no wider than the 50"?

The round one I saw was 40"in diameter- which would leave no room above & below...or another round at 32" in diameter..

The 3rd one is rectangular (not sure of the size, am going back today to measure).
Any advice would be sooo helpful:)

BTW. Anyone looking for a floor mirror in a pewter/nickel finish- there is a really nice one at Bombay for $349.00 ( we thought that was reasonable for the size). Thanks again

I don't think you should hang or put anything near the mirror, with that scale, you don't want the wall to get too busy around it.
I think you're good to go.
It sounds loverly, can't wait to see pics!

the room is painted a dark brick red...& is quite large...I think it can "hold" the 40" mirror. Also the frame is not black but a burnished pewter...so I think the lighter colour doesn't make it too imposing...any last thoughts gals? Really don't want to be a pest;)

the other one was 32" including the frame which was about 5"...you find it might be too big? I feel it's ok...
Thanks Mambogirl & janmac..I really appreciate everyones opinions & help...:)

if you don't mind smaller...although I would hesitate to put sconces because we have some scattered throughout the perimeter of the room...maybe some other doo- dad? If anything..I really would like to keep my orchid on the mantle...& it's rather tall.

the mirror is 40" in diameter including the width of the frame- the frame itself is approx. 6" wide. The mirror in question is round (that made me sound like Dreamer)

the fireplace is on an angled wall 66" wide
the mantle shelf is 63" wide
the granite surrounding the actual fireplace is 6" wide all around ( the 50" includes this measurement)...thanks for doing this for me Artsy _You are too kind:)

If you look like that and still managed to snare a husband then your talents lie somewhere other than decorating.

yes it will probably end up looking like it is resting on the mantle...there may be 1/2" of space on top...& it will definately not extend past the width of the fireplace. Thanks ladies! Just the vote of confidence I needed:) Thank God I had them put it on hold...I will definately post a pic..as soon as I get my hands on DH's pc...mine doesn't have the capability to run the software...this weekend for sure. I AM SO EXCITED!!! THanks again..

look a bit cramped on the wall, but for $150, surely you can find another place for it if it doesn't fit.
I think you would be okay, but these are one of those that are hard to judge until you've seen it...

it's a 600.00$ mirror on FINAL sale for $150.00!! The template looks ok...there is such a strong black focal on the lower that I think the large size will balance it well. I didn' t know if there was some "rule" about space above & below...staring at the template it looks balanced with the lower half of the wall...

have you recovered from your trip to Home depot? I laughed on & off all day....you know the world is small - what if that was me in line with the mustache? And this is how I find out about it...on the internet?

I would go round. I'll give your eyes a nice rest from all of the straight lines. BTW isn't life filled with enough tension without getting it from your furniture?

very dramatic...has a wood frame that is quite robust & about 5 or 6 inches wide... I love the lok in that pic. Mambo - do you think it would be ok if the edge of the frame reached exactly to the top of the wall & the bottom of the mantle?

If you can find a mirror with a a nice thick frame on it, I think it would look delicious over your fireplace. You might have problems finding one that fits your dimensions though, because of the diameter of round things, the things just get enourmous.....?

Oh you know me, I'm really a size minus one ;)
I have succumbed to the fact that I cannot dress the way I want to when living here, so I dress appropriately. Dirty sweatpants, no make-up, baggy sweaters. I slide right in here... :(

no:( But definately sexy:D:D:D

I went to GUESS- next time shoot me before I go in there...who in this world wears the god-forsaken fricken size 0????? I did manage to buy a (single) pair of jeans (muuuch bigger than 0)...which I'm told I should be impressed about..(I had a gift card that needed to be spent-otherwise I would have definately gone elsewhere) I like Saras too- but don't have one here...& you think you live on the dark side?

Don't be afraid ;)
What exciting designer shops did you visit? I have a thing for Sara...the clothes!!!
About your mirror, is your sexy man handy? You can build one, remember the instructions in H&H in February I think....

I was thinking of you while shopping for clothes yesterday ( & having the worst possible time fitting into them) I thought to myself that Hottie probably has no problem squeezing her thin Scandinavian-blonde haired body into these ridiculous designs they call fashion...I would hiss at you if I could type it;) HISSSS:D

I much prefer shopping for home fashions !!!!!!

of course you can go round. don't go over the dimensions of the fireplace.
I have to check my converter I have no clue what dimensions we're talking about here....

thanks...I'm afraid the round one I saw is a final sale-it is drastically reduced. But maybe I'll try a template to see...I get the same feeling though, that without some space above & below that it will lokk odd.

You mentioned 32" rectangular..do you not think larger would work? I have 50" w to work with (fireplace width) with about 5 more inches on either side of the granite...
