Hi everyone! I'm wondering if any of you can offer some suggestions as to how I can decorate this ugly old style shelving in our house. My husband doesn't want me to paint or tear these shelves out so I want to try to decorate them or place things in them so it doesn't look horribly cluttered, busy and just awful like it does now. ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated! :o)
Thanks!
Shelley

It's a very busy shelf. It looks like it's between your stairway and your LR, so I assume you don't want to block too much light from the LR.
It's too bad you can't paint it out. It appears there may already be a lot of woodgrain in this area and my first choice would be to paint it white. If you left it empty it would serve as an interesting element as is, I think. Any collection would probably be a careful one unifying like items by limited colour (no more than 2 maybe?) and/or like items.
I don't know what the LR looks like but maybe you could hang a few pieces of art on it, maybe one rectangular one in a larger scale with two smaller ones next to it like the grouping over the bench in this first inspiration picture but use just paintings. (I chose this picture to illustrate how the white-painted pieces look though, but you'd have that look from the painted shelf)
You could also consider hanging framed mirrors as shown in one of the other pictures below, or even 3-4 tin barn stars in a colour of your choice.
I'm not crazy about displaying CD'S-I'd leave the above one empty.
The above one is a little busy for me but it illustrates how framed mirrors can look mounted on a shelf. I like how the colours were carefully chosen in this last one.
I hope this helps.
I don't know how handy you guys are, but you could install flat slab style mdf doors in some of the openings ... paint them solid colours - could be a really cool effect. You could do them in white, or even different simple colours...
If you really wanna go nuts - silicone some mirrors on the mdf so the doors are mirrored. I did that on the lowest level of a shelving unit I have and it really opened up how big the floor space appears to be.
Best part is that doors really hide clutter and garbage and make it look clean and snappy.
Good luck!!
Hi Shelley, I like your shelving, but to eliminate the cluttered look I would start a collection of all white or blue & white pottery. You could always spray paint some of the existing articles you have there. I think articles of all one colour would look awesome.Family photos in white frames would be nice on a few of the shelves .It is sooo... much fun hunting for treasures in second hand shops.I love doing this.
Don't put stuff in every opening. Leave some empty. Also, in some, create a vingette with a 3 or 5 smaller of different heights. Keep them close together so it looks like a grouping. Alas, I agree with all the others that it would look 100% better if painted white or even black.
I agree, a couple coats of white paint would do wonders, but since that's not an option, check out these blogs on styling bookshelves:

Would it look less cluttered if the 2 outside shelves were aligned together? Then leave the middle unit different. I would like to see it painted as well.
Seriously?? I think it's awesome! I'd want to paint it though, too bad hubby is against that.
