Aan would crawl out from under the rock she likes to hide under and bite us all in the hiney for doing so... it's like defacing Ikea in her mind...
However, I think the comments that were being made about Sarah were that she potentially is falling into the trap of many other designers who have been coached into branding a particular look for commercial success. Many people have commented on this boards and others that they preferred Sarah of Room Service vs. Sarah and her crew on Design Inc. I personally, love to watch both. One dorm room does not a budget design show make. And yes, I love when I have a big budget to do up a kitchen and bathroom but in most instances my clients are NOT able or willing to drop $50,000 on a bathroom. I believe the comments that started this thread off were that many forum-ites here would like to see a show that was, in priniciple, budget-oriented - something which Sarah's show has become less about. However, we are more aware of Jessica, Tommy et al, which I know for some is far less interesting.
Personally, I find Sarah a delight. She is equally as delightful in person and the genuineness that she brings to the small screen she exudes in person as well. I was recently asked by a branding coach "What's your look?"... to which I responded, "My look is the client's look filtered through my own personal esthetic." He responded that the Sarah's and Brians of the world have been coached to deliver a particular esthetic - their "brand." This is their choice. I don't know how other people feel about this, but for my own design sense - I choose not to go this route.
It doesn't mean that I don't love her cream/blue rooms = that's my own PERSONAL taste and I could watch it endlessly.
she did use bright orange, dark blue, and red accent walls in several of her projects last season. Each one very different and unique in its own right. she even did this Vancouver condo for a guy who loved colour and the condo had colour used through out in a very appropriate way. Hey come on now, if we think hard enough we can find something negative about anything. I personally think she is a good designer very respectful of proportions, forms and functions in a space. And she has been very successful and therefore the fact that many people like to pay her top dollar to use her unique and interesting materials to do their bathrooms or kitchens. I would be surprise if any designer would ever say no to that. Meanwhile she is still doing student residences and little bedrooms here and there.
when Sarah R was here at the home show a couple of weeks ago my SIL & I sat through one of her shows even though both of us are into colour which means we aren't really into Sarah's style. Well the surprise was, there she was with her sample boards explaining the new trend towards colour. Boy oh boy, everyone better have some dark earthy greens, red, and blues in there. No mention of the usual subdued-looks-white-to-me rooms I'm so used to seeing her promote.
I have to say, not being a fan of hers in any big way, that she did a very good show with lots of good general info related to what makes things work/not work together. I was wishing we were going to be around for her second show which was on inexpensive fixups for a kitchen that would look like a more major reno. (boy that wasn't well worded, but I hope you get my drift)
Meanwhile I guess we'll see if she starts adding some colour in her show or not.
however, the design is from what I can gather, somewhat dictated to you.. ie: if you wanted to save money and put in a formica countertop you could get vetoed... Apparently Design Inc. specified all sorts of materials that drove their project $$ through the roof and it got to be beyond what they could afford so they declined the show. It's still a beautifully shot show but I fear that Sarah has started to really brand a particluar "Look" which is going too Gluckstein or Mimran for me... need to spice up that colour scheme folks!
i was reading my style at home mag and they had a list of different shows that the public could enter to be on....from what i remember they listed some that were free to go on, very few were free and then most of them were around 5000 but they said you would get 30.000 dollars in work done, i will find that article and let you know more,

like the show cityline but miss it now as they changed times a long time ago....i liked sarah richardsons first show (room service), i loved her ideas and the way she spoke about the room she was designing, always detailed, but the more i watch design inc, i have found she seems almost snooty and gives off attidute and i cant say i like her new show as well, she just seems like a whole different person. Foxxy hopefully we will see that show, that you speak of, they need to come here and read our posts and the show will be a hit for sure!

and that is exactly what design should be about, your design talents with what the client loves....that is what makes the house a home.... their personal taste has to be incorporated. It is good that the show allows you and the homeowner to make these choices, as a viewer you dont know if it is dictated as to what decisions are made with the designs and so true it cant be all about winning, if your client is happy with the outcome of thier room that is what is important.

Do you mean your friend was expected to pay the show costs as well as the budget for the room? I'm confused. My sister is about to apply to have her kitchen done on the show--is this something she should reconsider? I thought the client was only expected to pay the cost of furniture, contractors etc., but not the design fees of Sarah and Co. Is this the case as you know it? What else do you know about the show? Why yes, I am prying!
I know, I'm terrible. But I'm really curious now.
was all set to be on Sarah's show... but then Sarah presented them with a $40,000 bill for the proposed budget of the show and they had to walk away.. all the flea market finds weren't going to float that project!
Points noted regardling new show... have something in the fire as we speak that has developed from spending so much time reading and participating here. Here's hoping the powers that be have the wax out of their ears and sit up and take notice!
Janetc.. I refuse to simply copy someone else's design. I will look at an inspriation room for the show or simply a tear away from a magazine that a client - tv or otherwise fancies. I then seek to incorporate that person's lifestyle into the inspirational design which includes their space, their budget, and any other needs they may have. Just left a house where the model inspiration room is completely modern. They have an antique buffet that belonged to her grandmother. It COMPLETELY conflicts with the Model Room Design. My cohost would have them move it to another room. I WILL USE IT 10000% for certain of that. I love the tension it will create with all the modern pieces we will bring into the space. I will dress it in a modern and contemporary manner - but it speaks to the homeowner, her tastes, her memories... That is what DESIGN not merely decorating, is all about. This is what breathes life into a space and prevents it from becoming stale and sterile. It means that I don't always win every Design Match - but my homeowners love their new space and despite the newness, they still find it a place to call HOME which is what is most important!
I agree Cityline is still my favourite I think it addresses the average home owner with average questions. now they still do the high end redo's by BG but then there is always the questions answered.
that has always understood dealing with questions and average homeowners is Cityline (more so in the past when they always had Steven and Candice on showing projects anyone could do but they are still doing it). Someone there apparently has a brain as their Thursday shows have lead to having design panels on Tuesdays and often the whole show is dedicated to just answering questions. I love that show, it's been my favourite for years and they have never felt the need to add some ditsy concept to keep their popularlity. It works, they expand on it and resist this drame/game show mentality completely to present intelligent, viewer targetted material.
I have to say that the friend who was helping me clear the basement was wondering what the 70 or so VCR tapes I have are. Each and everyone is Cityline's homedays from over the years. I won't erase them, there is just too much good info and projects on them to part with and it is quite amazing how many people like to borrow them and hunker down for hours and hours just watching them.
So there is a show that has been on for years, as have a few others (perennial favourites I guess you'd call them) and yet the very network whose mission is to deal with homes (allegedly) choose to follow the dweeb shows. It doesn't make sense (but when did most TV shows make sense?) and you'd think a design panel answering questions would be way cheaper to produce than hiring all the labour and materials of the other shows that keep missing the mark. Funny thing is, now that I think of it, my favourite shows for decor and such (Cityline, Great Taste No Money, Devine Design, Me My House & I, Open Homes, This Old House) are not on HGTV they are on other networks who are doing it better than the one that is supposed to specialize in the subject.
Just the way mockup work around here, can you imagine, question, suggestions, show samples, show a mockup of the picture with the changes. Now I could see that being addicting (and if anyone uses it, I want credit for concept development).
As for DG new show, I've had it on twice and twice I fell asleep (my 'spell binding' rating so far 1 out of 10) so have yet to see how the room actually turned out.
to the average home /apt/condo owner/ renter as we are the ones seeking advice. "no more questions" ? Does that mean we will do it our way and appeal to the few ?
As I said with unlimted funds (which is what I see the design shows going with) you hire a decor-designer.
What about us Joe Public who want to make affordable changes? People buying another home seeking advise so they do not make costly mistakes.
They sure are missing the point I think. Featuring a multi million dollar home in a mag. is revelant to who?
Not the people I know who read decor mags and watch decor shows.
Sarah Richardson often shows how you can take a flea market find and work on it yourself for a rewarding decor item/
We need more of that.......There has to be one person who can achieve on a show what the average person can afford and do.
there is a show for Red when she is done lol..........she has the input right here, with her talents and our advice that could make for a big hit.....i think the general public is where it is at. Yes and that is what we need shows about simple changes and tweaking that almost any budget can live up to. I watched that game show for the first time today....oh my gosh! that is just awful, surely they could have come up with a better show idea than that....WHAT IS HAPPENING TO OUR HGTV...lol

Foxxy is right on. Exactly what I was saying when H& H said 'no more questions'. To me, that is what is missing from many of the design shows - the down to earth answers and achievable solutions to questions from 'ordinary' people.
Not many, any?, of us can afford or live close to Toronto to have a 'design show' come into our homes and have a complete makeover but, most can afford a tweak of what we have - paint, new blinds, cushions etc. To me that would be an extremely valuable show and if H & H is giving up the feature it would be a marvelous concept for some savvy local to Toronto TV celeb designer to base a new show upon.
Perhaps a local TO TV celeb designer could have that idea waiting in the wings when the really dumb decorating quiz show goes away? And, it will.
jmho
me understand...so Red you are saying that (not that you dont enjoy your new show) but would prefer to do a clients home with thier imput instead of having to copy or somewhat copy the design of others and they just wont here of it. If that is what you mean, that truly is sad because in all reality it would be a hit, that is what people want....using your talents of design, as you would off screen and the way you would design a clients room off the screen is what people would want to see i would say

They kept with the DG show title so they could dangle on the star of the popular original DG's.
"The Design Team" could be a show for the ordinary middle class that live in bungalows with children and pets. Most of the shows so far are hi-end homes /rooms that are decorated. A design team needs to get out of Toronto for one thing.
One of the most popular segments of the H&H Tv show is the "Ask a Designer". These questions are posed mostly by the middle class of their viewing audience. So A Tv show devoted to that premise and call it the "Design Team" would be great, I am sure many others would agree. :)
Someone come up with a show like this and I am sure you would be popular across the country.
Look how many design questions went unanswered in the Special Forum a few months back. I think a cue could be taken from this.
We all know by now how to achieve Hotel Chic bedrooms and Spa bathrooms. Lets get onto a country kitchen, a family room, a kids bedroom, a small living room, an apt. of normal size not over looking the Sky Dome. Give us some shabby chic...some romance...some fun....some great flea market finds put together with good design for a room and fabrics less that $100 per meter. The people with the funds hire a designer, they do not watch TV shows for ideas or post on forums for advise. Gad take a cue from here or the W network .
I have been at philosophical odds with the producers of my own show regarding copy catting on design. Anyone can copy a design. I have had countless clients bring me in pictures from a mag and say "I want this.." to which I usually answer - but you could do that yourself.. Let's use this as inspiration and go from there.
To this end, I have lost several shows in terms of the game because I did NOT copy the room, as my cohost preferred to do but rather, took my homeowner's tastes and preferences/lifestyle into account and matched the principals of design vs. duplicating it. As a result, the rooms have much more life or SOUL to them and are not replicas ... much more satisfying!
I will also say that many of the guest designers appreciated our "twists" on their initial design.. the room I posted last week with the four poster bed being an excellent example of a twist! The model room was yellow with a wooden four poster bed...
I know the production design team who did the DG3 show. They bought a lot of stuff from the store. In many instances, they were the ones decorating the spaces while the boys stuck to the architecture and the gadgets. I have seen some afters of some of the rooms they did and they are terrific - however, I will be watching for the before and tuning in at the very end to see the after... unless they want to recast it again... I ask you - why does it have to be Designer Guys Literally... why couldn't guys the euphimism be and include a woman or two??
Well the show was OK, not great. I feel as the 3 designers get more relaxed on camera it should help. Hotel Chic! Gad I am tired of that. I want to see rooms designed with something new. Nice fabric patterns and unusual accesories etc. Rooms that create a mood and the steps on how to create it for the average person's budget. No more hotel rooms!
I hated the bath in the room as well. I wonder how you light the candles? A step stool in the bath tub lol ? Oh well let's hope we see some design show s soon that are not copies of shows done before. This copy cat thing gets boring to me. There has to be a design team that can come up with a show for people living in regular homes that can show us some design ideas that do not break the bank. We can hope anyway. :)
yes Red...you always know how to make us smile... :p
advice, Meredith. It was just the ticket on a Thur afternoon :-)
I have a see thru shower and like it but a tub in the bedroom no thanks. I thought it made the room really small. Hotel Chic is it not time to move on from that.
Red...lol...who loves ya babe!!!!!..... ;)
edit...it would contain the likes of us two...if it was designed and decorated by you love..... :D
Kudos to the Editors - obviously they had their work cut out for them.
As for Mike and Jen.. I would tell you both to get a ROOM... but well I don't think it would contain the likes of you two!
I've stayed in a hotel with a tub beside the bed. It was a corner whirlpool tub though. Does that still count? I was about 3-4 steps away from the bed. Unfortunately it also leaked, so the carpet was wet before we even used it. Either that or the tub above us had problems. (it was many many many years ago, I don't recall if the ceiling looked drippy)
My neighbour has their jet tub in their bedroom. I can't tell you if I liked it or not. I was too overwhelmed by the clutter and 186 million bathtoys scattered everywhere for their 9 year old (their only child... but you guessed that didn't you)
I didn't see the Designer Guys episode, so I can't comment on that particular shower, but I recall a glass shower visible from the livingroom in the movie "So I Married an Axe Murder". I thought it was cool. Nothing I'd ever ever ever want for my own house, but cool nonetheless.
kipper
   ....behave yourself you..... :D ....probably the same reason i would not dislike seeing a shower with a glass wall upons walking into a man's apartment...now get your mind out of the gutter...there isn't enuff room for the two of us in there.... ;)...btw...i still don't think the tub thing is right
why I would dislike seeing a shower with a glass wall upon walking into a woman's apartment? :-)
i was just thnking....i have never seen a bathtub next to the bed in a hotel....anyone else seen one?...so how does that make a ''hotel'' look?
well atleast i'm not the only one that thinks the bathtub in the bedroom is a stupid idea...LAME!!!!!...and yes oakgal...i would not buy that house as soon as i would see that tub in the bedroom
The 3 guys seemed very uncomfortable on camera. It was so stitled and awkward. The design was nice enough, but when they went for Boutique Hotel Chic I about died. Talk about an overdone look. Enough with the hotel look. Who wants to live in a hotel anyway? *yawn* Also, good luck to her if she ever wants to sell the place.
A bathtub in the bedroom is very Dangerous Liaisons but so impractical and let's face it, messy. As for the see-through shower....well, at least she'd know if someone was sneaking up on her.
It's better than Design Rivals-which sucks. But I'm addicted to Design Inc. myself. It's the one I look forward to each week.
came on at 11:30 last night again but i didnt finish watching it, i fell asleep, so i will have to watch the repeat. i didnt mind the show designer guys with chris and steven but i disliked design rivals....way tooooooooo phoney for me
