New mantel idea

I've been trying for weeks to figure out how to decorate the mantel in the family room. I had an inspiration tonight -- instead of painting the wall, why not paint the mantel?? My hubby is cool with that idea, so I tried out some different colours with the BM personal viewer.

Do you think changing the colour of the mantel works?? First, here's the mantel as it looks right now (the picture will eventually be hanging on the wall and the things in the mantel will probaby change):

Yes, the BM personal viewer is definitely worth buying :) You can download it from the BM web site for $10 US (it came to about $14 Cdn, I think). It really helps to visualize what your room will look like painted different colours. And as you can see in the pics I posted, you can paint items in your room as well, not just the walls.

The colours in the viewer aren't quite true-to-life, but at least you get a good idea what a certain type of colour will look like. And you might discover that a colour you never would have thought of actually looks good :)

Once upon a time it was a figured oak (you remember the 80's, right). First, we stripped and stained it dark, but I didn't like the way the stain took (too uneven). Recently I painted it chocolate (see Album). I might paint it black soon.

And the third.... not to say that I plan to go with any of these specific colours. It's just to give an idea of what the different dark colours look like:

And the second colour:

Here's the first colour (I removed the scroll from above the fireplace box):
