Noisy bedding??

Mel76's picture

Well, I finally have a bed... :confetti: and bedding..... :confetti: but dang...its NOISY!!!! The sheets are so crisp and the duvet makes a helluva racket! Is this normal? Our duvet cover is just a cotton one, should I look for something in a heavier fabric?? Honestly, after last night, I'm thinking about keeping the duvet and cover to look pretty during the day, but buy a soft comfy conforter or something to use at night. Anyone else have this problem???

 Mel

PS...no pics yet, have to return some stuff, and buy some new stuff, and DF hasn't even attached the headboard to the bedframe yet. I also am having trouble picking lamps. Anyway....soon, I promise!

This has got to be the funniest thread! I've never considered my bedding to be at all noisy. Mind you I couldn't sleep on a squeaky plastic mattress protector though I appreciate this might be a necessity if you are have allergies etc. I love my soft cotton mattress protector.....I don't find the cotton to be at all noisy, just really soft.

Maybe there is just too much action going on in the bed ;) :clapping:

This really is funny, ok now. I always get Brian Gluckstein sheets they're nice and quiet, I always get them on sale at the Bay 100% cotton which is good. Hope this helps.

I, too, have noisy sheets in the guest room. They are a 60/40 blend and make noise even when I make the bed. I use the room as a fitting room, and when the bed is sat on, you can hear the crunching. I have a regular mattress protector and foam mattress. Just noisy sheets. When I put the old worn sheets on it, no noise. So, it is defnately the sheets. I have washed and washed them, no softening has happened at all.
Luckily we don't have too many guests, and my dad is hard of hearing so it doesn't bother him at all!!!!

Well, after a few washes..the sheets are fine. But...the mattress pad had to go! And we've had the duvet off the bed all summer. Guess we'll find out if the duvet was also part of the noise factor when I put it back on next week.

The sheets are the ones from Superstore. 230 thread count.

AND, the mattress pad is waterproof, with a layer vinyl or plastic or something.

:hairpull: Mel

I have sheets from Superstore, and mine don't make a noise..even at those times!!
I bet its your mattress pad with the vinyl plastic! Remove that and see if the sheets get quieter.

The waterproof mattress cover is what is noisy I bet. I used to encase my mattress in a plastic cover for allergies, not because I wet the bed :D When I had young men visit overnight the noisy plastic cover seemed to upset them. I discovered they had another kind of mattress cover that was made out of a fabric kind of material so I switched. It was kind of funny having people think I wet the bed though.

Ok, I realize now that I have to clarify that the sheets are noisy ALL THE TIME!!! (Not just "certain" times..lol) Everytime I turn over, or move my feet or when DF does any of that! GOOD LORD!!!!

I found a quilted style bedspread today at Sears for $30 in a robin's egg blue kinda colour (that matches my rug perfectly) and I hauled off the duvet and threw that on there. Not sure if its gonna stay, but I'm certainly gonna use it tonight. I'll take a picture tomorrow of the work in progress...get some opinions. This putting together a beautiful room thing isn't as easy as I'd anticipated!

We have a thread on this that I believe I started last year on this Noisy sheet subject. In the end I had to go to Ikea and purchased their 4 season duvet. i just love it. All my sheets are Egyptian Cotton , the noisy sheets that I had were made in China and have a sateen finish on them, I won't use them and neither will my kids. The duvet that I purchased originally was a synthetic duvet, it was expensive, got it home and it was to noisy, every time I moved of DH moved we could hear it.
Drove us nuts.

OMG, I have a set of crunchy sheets -- HATE them!!!! They feel yucky and they're so LOUD!!!!! :hairpull:

Is your duvet filled with goose feathers?? Ours is, and it's noisy too. I replaced it with a silk duvet -- it's a lot thinner but keeps me nice and warm and it doesn't make any noise at all.

My fave sheets at the moment are gray flannel ones I bought at Beddingtons -- $40 for king size :)

Yes Mel you don't have to broadcast your nightly activities, we can well imagine ;)
Are you using fabric softener? I really don't know what the solution might be unless your sheets are those polycotton types and the polyester is what is making a crunching sound. If they are those kind then replace them with 100% cotton sheets of quality.

If the sheets are 300-400 thread count and washed in mild soap they should not be stiff and crispy. Anything over 400 is not worth the price. I was given 250 TC and hate them....way too rough and stiff.
This from the net.

When laundering bedding, always use gentle soap. If anyone in your family suffers from skin irritation, the laundry detergent can often be determined as the culprit. Using a fragrance-free, gentle soap such as Woolite can make bed linens softer while preventing irritation to sensitive skin. When washing baby bed linens, you definitely want to use a very gentle soap since baby's skin is hyper-sensitive to irritation caused by stiff linens.

The answer to the question of how do I make stiff bed linen soft may vary based on the hardness or softness of your water supply. If your water supply offers hard water, meaning that there are certain minerals in the water in specific amounts, you probably have noticed an especially tough to remove soap scum circle in your tub or shower stall. :)

a 1/4 cup of white vinegar in your rinse cycle will aid in a thorough rinsing of the sizing agents, stopping them from redepositing themselves in the sheets as the cycle continues. It's actually an excellent addition to your overall laundry repetoire in place of chemical fabric softeners.
