This is the best recipe - we have it every year.......on Christmas morning!
If you are nervous, just reduce your milk by 1/2 cup. The first time I made it I could not fit all 3 cups including the eggs in the dish without it overflowing. There was no difference to the taste and it was very firm. I am sure your guests will love it!
She said it tasted fine just didn't serve nicely and didn't look as nice.
did it taste good?
My friend made the Wife Saver for a group for breakfast a while back and she used Skim Milk and it wouldn't set up. It stayed thin and sloppy and she has made it before and that was the only thing she did different so be sure to use whole milk.
This needs a deeper dish than the standard 9X13. I have used different kinds of cheese, substituted precooked real bacon bits...( and served this along with a baked ham) and like a mixture of red and green peppers. I cannot remember using Special K but the crushed Corn Flakes form kind of a crust when baked. It is really very good ...especially for a crowd. Tastes just like quiche and easy to serve. I think this recipe is over 25 years old...and may have other names. It was suggested to serve with fresh fruit and cinnamon buns. Enjoy your brunch!
This is built like a lasagna....Butter a deep 9 X13 glass baking dish. You will need 16 slices of bread, crusts, removed. 16 slices of Cdn back bacon or slices of ham. 16 slices of sharp cheddar cheese. 6 eggs, 1/2 tsp each of salt, pepper and dry mustard. 1-2 tsp of worcestershire sauce, 1/4 cup each chopped onion and green pepper, 3 cups of whole milk, 1/4 cup of melted butter, Special K or Crushed Corn Flakes. To assemble, cover bottom of pan with 8 slices of bread, top with bacon or ham, and then sliced cheese. Repeat. Then in a large mixing bowl, beat eggs with salt, pepper and dry mustard. Add milk and worcestershire sauce, minced onion and chopped peppers. Pour egg mixture over layers in baking dish. Cover and refrigerate. Next morning, melt butter and pour over top. Cover with cereal (no actual amount given) and bake for 1 hour. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
