Now I'm stuck!!

millardjoy's picture

I am doing a budget makeover of my bedroom and bathroom. My bedroom is in a soft taupe and accents of light blue and I wanted to carry over the same color into the en suite bath.

I had terrible white laminate vanities and a boring HUGE mirror. This weekend I painted the vanity and framed out the mirror. Major improvement but now I am stuck with what to do next.

I am going to replace the lighting and the blast from the past shiny brass faucets. I was thinking about going with BM Iced Cube Silver. Do you think that would look ok? Also - I want to put in a chandelier and paint the ceiling a nice accent color. Is there a good taupe to pair with Iced Cube Silver? I am also open to other color ideas that would blend with my bedroom.

Thanks for any feedback!!

My only concern (and this may be just my hangup) would be having that mirror reflecting back at me while I was soaping up in the shower. That kind of view would not make my day.

On the other hand, someone who kind of likes that may end up taking way longer in the shower than need be by spending time posing and such.

I agree you need a place to hang the towels close to the shower or he will always toss it over the shower.I also don't think the hanger over the door is classy enough for your beautiful bathroom. I would remove it and have nothing before that one sorry it takes away from such anice spot.

i still believe you placed wrong robes on the door (?) and photos near the shower. that's why your dh doesn't use your hooks - because it's far away from the shower. here is illustration of what i meant.
and yes, the 3d mirror looks out of place.

I have hung the mirror and replaced the vanity knobs with glass ones.

I am still not sure about that mirror but it's better than an empty wall!!

I like the first and fourth fabrics. The ones with the browns. The black and white is sharp, but seems to be introducing something too new and unrelated to the scene. The blue and tan looks like its trying too hard to go with the rug. I think the first fabric is my favourite for this stool. Will you keep the full skirt on it or go more tailored? Have you tried the mirror yet?

I like the etiene but it would have to match the walls and rug to work.
The black and white options would be the safer bet but I feel you already have a lot of black in there as it is and it will become overbearing with the blue walls.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I RARELY use the tub so I dont mind the blocked access. My preference would be to leave both of the stools there and recover the vanity stool.

It is also from ballard - they sell the LOTS of fabrics as covers as well. Any of these look good?

I was wondering why there were 2 stools in front of the tub, as lovely as they are.

try to replace it with one of your new stools - or is it too big? if the size is ok, i think it should look perfect there! plus having 2 stools in front of the bath completely blocks the access to it. try, may be it will work.

Your bathroom is lovely! You could recover the vanity stool in toile.

Thanks for all of the feedback.

About the robe/hooks...now that I am outted...it is my ATTEMPT to get my DH to not throw towels over the shower!! Pet peeve but that's reality. :) My robe is there as a strong HINT to him to NOT throw his robe and towel over the shower! Didnt work this morning but what can you do!

I will hang the mirror tomorrow and see how that works.

I have had the vanity stool that is covered for years and years....is consensus that this should be changed? What would I change it to? I could probably locate another slipcover (it came from ballards as well).

Thanks for all of the feedback - maybe I can actually FINISH this rrom before starting another! ;)

Thanks for the great suggestion!

very-very nice bathroom, good progress!
the only thing that looks strange to me - your robe hanging on the door - usually it's typical for tiny rooms (like in my house), but you have so much space! why not to put 2 hooks on the wall near the shower - very practical and stylish. the art from that space you can move to the shelf wall, i think it will look better, right now the shelf there a bit lonely. just a suggestion.
love the stools and chandelier! and a little toile makes it more cozy.

I really like all the changes. The one thing that stands out to me is the little brown seat under that cabinet. With everything else basically redone and looking more tailored it doesn't seem to work. To me, the style of the covers seems out of place compared the rest of what you have done. Have you considered recovering or replacing it?

I think the mirror is fine as long as it is big enough and the stools are lovely.

Your bathroom looks fantastic! I love the toile curtain, my favourite pattern. I think the mirror would look beautiful in the room, can you hang it above the shelf? I would also edit a few items, I like the suggestion of a plant on top of the small cabinet you have in the corner, real or fake. On the shelf, I would leave the 2 glass containers on the right, slide the books & frame over to the other side & remove the other item(s) Or if you can place the mirror above the frame, I would put the 4 tea light holders on the shelf & that's it. I would also remove a couple of items from the tub, the tea light holders I would only take out for use & the towel/soap I would place on the rack on the tub & I think I'd move out the candle holder too & just keep the buddha. Do you have room on your vanity for the candle holder? I really like the rug, stools & Dexter as well!

I also bought this mirror at HS for a steal but don't think it is right...although Dexter loves to stare at himself in it! ;D

I received the PB stools - what do you think??

I have to resolve my over the tub dilemma - I am really liking the idea of a large venetian mirror and removing the shelf. Although I have no idea where to get one that is reasonable.

I am also thinking of replacing my vanity knobs with antique glass ones. How do you think that would look??

Any other ,ideas?

What about removing the shelf and putting a very large piece of art, or a beautiful mirror there. Maybe a venetian mirror?

Much better with less clutter. Can't wait for the bench as well. Will the basket go beside it or under it? I think it would be too tall to put the basket on the bench.
Anyway, a couple of suggestions for above the shelf. What about a hanging plant - silk or otherwise - one that droops down like a boston fern hung more in the corner though. Or . . . some of the vinyl wall art. There are lots of sites on the internet to look through and this is where you could keep with the black or add another colour in. I got some wall art from 2 different suppliers and put them together on our 2pc bathroom wall. One was a peacock (hmm, imagine that ) and the other was a tree branch. The peacock looked too lonely and bare without the branch.
Another suggestion would be the art work with the letters made out of everyday stuff (search previous threads as someone else posted some pictures of these and maybe you could spell out 'RELAX' and have it maybe 4 to 6 inches above the tallest thing on the shelf.

I love it too! You've done such a wonderful job!

Can't wait to see the final pics with those beautiful benches from PB!

I now have a tub faucet and hung my toile roman shade.

Thoughts? I am sitting on pins and needles waiting for my benches from PB...
can't wait to see how they will look!

The frames are black - I tried silver first but didnt think that it looked right either. This was the first time I have actually enlarged my own photography and tried to use it in a space. But not sure what else would look good there, either!

I am truly stuck at what to do over the tub. I'd love a wall mount fireplace but it is not the most practical thing - and when in the tub you would not even be able to look at it!

I love what you've done! And those PB benches will look great! I may be biased though, because the colour scheme is almost identical to my own ensuite...I used Behr's Cumberland Fog.

Just one question - are the frames black or dark brown like your vanity (or maybe the vanity/mirror are black as well)? I find the frames of the BW photos look black and very stark against the blue walls... I wonder what they would like like a brown or silver frame?

Mrs. Peacock's picture
Mrs. Peacock

Love the transformation and colour of your bathroom! Just a couple of suggestions though. Line up the 2 pictures by the vanity so they are centered on the wall instead of staggered. Make them the width of the frame apart.

Also, I am not liking the tall thing on the corner table by the sink. Maybe a bosten fern or some other plant (even silk) would be nice. I think you have too much stuff around your tub and most of the items have the same shape and height. I like the candle in the corner but not fond of the 3 items on the ledge by the shower. I would edit some of the stuff on the shelf too. Remember to clump things in odd numbers - 3 or 5 works best. Maybe the cotton ball container could go on your vanity or the small table and then on the shelf, keep the other container, the picture and add large sea shell.

Also, I would be worried about the glass container on the side of the tub. Either you or your cat could knock it onto the floor or worse, into the tub so i would remove it.

I like the carpet, once you get your bench in front of the tub, I think it will help. I like the idea of a roman blind in a toile or white wooden 2" venetion blinds with a toile topper. Hope this helps.

Also - my furbaby/helper, Dexter. :)
Look forward to hearing your ideas!

Paint is ALMOST done (need tall husband help!). Shower is refinished, framed my own photography, puchased rug, replaced faucets (except for tub faucet which was speacial order, grr). Also, ordered the PB collette benches that I posted earlier as wellas the PB Toile Roman Shade.

A couple of questions - what do you think of the art? I am stumped at what to put above my shelf over the tub. I am on the fence with the rug - I think it is ok but I am not in love. I am also thinking about replacing the knobs on the cabinets with glass knobs.

Thoughts??

Thanks so much for all your information. I am anxious to try this as I can't stand the brass look any longer.

millardjoy's picture

I think as long as you are careful to seal it and not let it get wet for two days - it should be fine. I even refinished my kitchen aid mixer - you cannot beat the finish off. The only thing you really have to be careful of is getting an even coat on - I used a foam roller on every area that I could. Other spots where I had to use a brush does have slight brush strokes...but it's not shiny brass!
